Theology, Audience, and Purpose: Liefeld takes an evangelical approach to Scripture. Theology, Audience, and Purpose: Patzia denies Pauline authorship.

"More than any other book of the Bible, Ephesians displays the great purpose and plan of God for the church," Walter Liefeld writes. "It provides a perspective that is unique: God's--and the believer's--view from the 'heavenly realms.'" For those who long to delve into the mind and purposes of God, few books are more helpful than Paul's letter to the Ephesians. Here the apostle paints in broad strokes the great plan of God for his church, centered on its head, Jesus Christ, and living out its calling in praise of God's glory. Beginning with doxology, Paul calls on the church to support its words of praise with deeds to match. Christians today will find here inspiration and insight that will confirm their allegiances and shape their lives. Written with warm pastoral insight, this commentary supplies readers with a helpful introduction, covering authorship, date, background material and a summary of theological themes. A passage-by-passage exposition follows that focuses on understanding what Paul had to say to his original readers in order to see its relevance for the church today.

The previous review does not explain why its an average work. Like he said, the IVP NT Series does not pretend to be comprehensive, but pastoral. To give it three stars because it isn't 700 pages like a thoroughly critical commentary is unfair. The fact is that at 178 pages its still longer than the majority of Ephesians commentaries in existence. Ben Witherington's commentary is shorter, as are the commentaries written by Charles Talbert, N.T. Wright, and a host of others.

Liefeld's work is excellent. He gives a great overview of the text without getting bogged down. Like most expositional commentaries are, this one definitely helps to see the whole forest of the texts instead of getting lost in the individual trees like Best's or Hoehner's, who both at times seem to forget what they said ten pages before on the very same topic. Liefeld does not have such a problem, which results in a brief but helpful commentary on Ephesians.

Hopefully the five stars I've given it will balance the overall rating.

The VIP Commentary series is just wonderful. I use it weekly in my preparation for Sundays. It is understandable and scholarship is great.

This work on Ephesians by professor Walter Liefeld does not pretend to be in depth or comprehensive. If your looking for more of an overview of the texts coupled with trite and witty commentary this work is for you.
But be not mistaken. If you look for a comprehensive work on Ephesians from a conservative approach, purchase Peter O'Brien's new work on Ephesians in the Pillar series. From a more critical stance get E. Best's (ICC) work on Ephesians.
