The Book of Jonah is a book of the Nevi'im ("Prophets") in the Hebrew Bible. It tells of a Hebrew prophet named Jonah son of Amittai who is sent by God to prophesy the destruction of Nineveh but tries to escape the divine mission. Set in the reign of Jeroboam II (786–746 BC), it was probably written in the post-exilic period, some time between the late 5th to early 4th century BC. The story has a long interpretive history and has become well known through popular children's stories

The Wonder Book of Bible Stories - Logan Marshall. At this time another prophet, named Jonah, was giving the word of the Lord to the Israelites. But Jonah did not wish to preach to the people of Nineveh; for they were the enemies of his land, the land of Israel. He wished Nineveh to die in its sins, and not to turn to God and live. Then Jonah told them the whole story, how he came from the land of Israel, and that he had fled away from the presence of the Lord. And they said to him: "What shall we do to you, that the storm may cease?"

The story of Jonah and the big fish (most people know this as Jonah and the whale) is one that .

The story of Jonah and the big fish (most people know this as Jonah and the whale) is one that reminds us we can never run away from Gods plan for our lives. God called to Jonah one day and told him to go preach to Nineveh because the people were very wicked. Jonah hated this idea because Nineveh was one of Israel's greatest enemies and Jonah wanted nothing to do with preaching to them!

Jonah, in the story, feels about Nineveh as does the author of the Book of Nahum-that the city must inevitably fall because of God’s judgment against it. Thus Jonah does not want to prophesy, because Nineveh might repent and thereby be saved.

Jonah, in the story, feels about Nineveh as does the author of the Book of Nahum-that the city must inevitably fall because of God’s judgment against it. So he rushes down to Joppa and takes passage in a ship that will carry him in the opposite direction, thinking to escape God.

Check out this Bible story sumarry of the book of Jonah. Jonah awoke in the belly of the fish and cried out to God. He confessed his disobedience and told God that he would accomplish the task that the Lord had called him to. God then instructed the whale to vomit Jonah out onto dry ground. Jonah lacks appreciation for God’s mercy. After finding himself alive and on dry land, Jonah ran to the city of Nineveh. To his amazement, and apparent disappointment, the people of Nineveh did repent and asked for the Lord’s salvation.
