Description

Jesus, Judaism, & Christian Anti-Judaism book.

Jesus, Judaism, & Christian Anti-Judaism book. Paula Fredriksen, the Aurelio Professor of Scripture emerita at Boston University, since 2009 has been Distinguished Visiting Professor of Comparative Religion at the Hebrew University, Jerusalem. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she also holds two honorary doctorates in theology and religious studies.

Louisville, Ky. and London: Westminster John Knox Press, 2002. Fredriksen's essay, "The Birth of Christianity and the Origins of Anti-Judaism," argues that as the identity and theology of certain types of Gentile Christianities develop in the second century, so too grows the use of demeaning views of Judaism to express that theology. Arguing how to read the Bible, these theologies serve to clarify self-identity over and against "Jews," that is, the Christian antitype.

Paula Fredriksen is the Aurelio Professor of Scripture at Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. She has published widely in the social and intellectual history of ancient Christianity from the late Second Temple period to the fall of the Roman Empire in the West.

Fredriksen examines how Augustine came to reject this view and to argue that the Jewish God and the Christian God were one and the same. In doing so, Augustine fundamentally altered the relationship between Christianity and Judaism and one might argue saved Jews from the widespread persecution that Christians carried out against all other religious groups between the 4th and 6th centuries. Fredriksen is a first-rate scholar and a brilliant writer.

Current scholarship in the study of ancient Christianity is now available to nonspecialists through this collection of essays on anti-Judaism in the New Testament and in New Testament interpretation. While academic writing can be obscure and popular writing can be uncritical, this group of experts has striven to write as simply and clearly as possible on topics that have been hotly contested. The essays are arranged around the historical figures and canonical texts that matter most to Christian communities and whose interpretation has fed the negative characterizations of Jews and Judaism. A select annotated bibliography also gives suggestions for further reading. This book should be an excellent resource for academic courses as well as adult study groups.

How has a religion so dependent on two Jewish men (Jesus and Paul) developed (in some manifestations) anti-semitic ideas? The book has a selected bibliography for further reading and both scripture and subject indices. This book takes a look at some of the earliest Christian texts and their contexts to examine the roots of anti-Jewish thought in Christianity. The contributors are all New Testament scholars. The Jewish perspectives of Levine, Reinhartz, and Fredricksen provide a fresh set of eyes on traditional Christian texts and offer perceptive new insights not visible to folks who read these texts only from the orthodox Christian perspective. If you merely want to reinforce beliefs developed in your high-school youth Sunday-school program, this book is not for you. Those who think that what Jesus actually said and did matters will benefit from learning about the contexts described in this collection of articles. I thought that Fredricksen's chapter on the birth of Christianity was particularly helpful.

Not nearly enough on the financial aspects of money lending as it affects anti-Semitism.

Her book is only based on the gospels and all the anti Jewish remarks made towards the Jewish people are washed away simply by saying they are not anti Jewish remarks. This is not a book that can be used as a tool for research. It lacks scholarship.
