Sir Lloyd George Geering ONZ GNZM CBE (born 26 February 1918) is a New Zealand theologian who faced charges of heresy in 1967 for his controversial views. Geering was born in Rangiora, Canterbury, New Zealand, and "embraced" the Christian tradition in 1937.

Geering has brought Ecclesiastes to life by ingeniously composing imaginative dialogues with the sage, which show that he was a free-thinker, a humanist, and an existentialist.

Such is life! a close encounter with Ecclesiastes. The heretical book of the Bible. Published 2010 by Polebridge Press in Salem, Or. Written in English. Imaginary conversations, Criticism, interpretation, Bible, Skepticism, Biblical teaching. Engaging with Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes, who are you? What do you mean by "God"? Nature and us. Is life unfair? Is death the end of us?

Though some twenty three centuries have passed since an anonymous Jewish sage calling himself the Proclaimer (Ecclesiastes) set down his thoughts about life, they are strangely in tune with todays secular age. Its surprising, therefore, that they ever found a place in Holy Scripture. Lloyd Geering has brought Ecclesiastes to life by ingeniously composing imaginative dialogues with the sage, which show that he was a free thinker, a humanist, and an existentialist. In fact, this biblical heretic essentially undermined the rest of the Hebrew Bible by finding no discernible thread of purpose in the universe or in human existence, and by proposing that though Nature operates in ever-repeating cycles, much of human life is determined by sheer chance. The role of the sage, as Ecclesiastes saw it, was not to pass on gems of eternal wisdom, but to goad us into thinking things out for ourselves in our search for meaning in life.

Religious people often attack the concept of humanism as if the Bible does not contain that viewpoint. Ecclesiastes is in awe of the natural world and asserts that humans alone are responsible for building meaningful and fulfilling lives. Geering demonstrated that Jesus of Nazareth proclaimed similar positions. As he championed the value of every "expendable" person in Galilee of the Roman Empire, he advised people to take care of one another in the "here and now" and to appreciate the little joys each day brings. Both Ecclesiastes and Jesus enjoyed the physical pleasures of food and drink and recommended them to everyone else.

My only suggestion is that Geering's previous book, Coming Back to Earth, be read first. (No, I am not a paid reviewer). Also, Don Cupitt's Nothing Above but Sky. To gain an insight of that book, visit his web presentation, The Religion of Ordinary Life at [...]

This book is very interesting in that it makes one feel like he is back living in the times of Old testament history and listening to a Sage talking and pondering the meaning of life.

The intro was the best part of the book for me, then the rest was repetitive and too cute.
