This was such an easy read, this could be knocked out in a day depending on your reading skills. I thought this was right on target with what I needed for my ministry, many of his ideas I had already considered, so this book acted as a conformation in those areas. This was my first read of Kraeuter's work and I would love to read more of his books based off of what I learned from this one.

(NOTE: This review was written for the original version of this book, which is now out of print...I have not yet read this newer, updated edition.)

This is an exceptional book and I HIGHLY recommend ALL worship leaders read this book! In my opinion, Tom Kraeuter does a wonderful job of balancing between
a) the spiritual/theological discussions of both why and how we worship AND lead worship, and
b) the practical, hands-on type stuff involved in worship ministry.

He is careful to not get too specific in his practical topics, so that the reader is not persuaded to emulate Tom's EXACT methods, which may not work for every church and worship leader. At the same time, however, he gives many insightful examples throughout the book, which do a wonderful job of explaining the ideas he is trying to get across.

Not only do I feel encouraged in my calling as worship leader by the message in this book, but I've already begun implementing some of the practical tips discussed and I'm excited to try some of the others.

Here are just a few of the topics he discusses are:
1. Stage layout
2. Choosing songs
3. Building a master song list
4. Forming & working with a band
5. Communicating with your band
6. Rehearsals
7. The worship service
8. Training/mentoring others
9. The Senior Pastor's role in worship
10. The importance of prayer in/for your worship ministry

This is definitely one of the BEST books on Worship Ministry I've ever read (if not THE best!) Now that I've read this and enjoyed it so much I am looking forward to picking up Kraeuter's other books, starting with "Keys to Becoming an Effective Worship Leader"! If anybody else has read any of this author's books, let me know what you think of them!

If you are looking for an all inclusive detailed book on "How To Be An Effective Worship Leader," this is not it. However, if you are looking for a book to give you a solid foundation on which to build a worship leading ministry, this is an excellent book. He begins with the foundation out of which all ministry flows: Grace. Another stone to the foundation is prayer. Not only do worship leaders need God's guidance for the church service, we should allow the congregation to focus on God in prayer. In doing so, our "music" may decrease in focus, but God will increasingly become the focus. The author also gives guidelines on finding the right personnel for the music team, and explains how to communicate your vision as a worship leader to them and how to work with them. Kraeuter also speaks to the issue of developing a solid song list. One significant issue he addresses is the importance of examing the lyrics. For example, do the lyrics line up with Scripture? Kraeuter also includes tips on worship team rehearsals, platform set up, electronic equipment, and prepation. The final chapter of the book is for Pastors only. This chapter encourages the pastor to be an example as a worshipper to the congregation. If you are beginning as a worship leader or reconstructing your worship ministry, I highly recommend this book.
