The Amethyst Heart (9781595540539) by Penelope J. Stokes. The only possession Miss Amethyst Noble loves as much as the antique brooch she wears at her throat is Noble House-a symbol of freedom, faith, and a family history proudly and inextricably entwined with the history of a nation. For a hundred and forty years, Noble House has been a place of shelter, hope, and healing in Cambridge, Mississippi.

This story touched my heart in a very personal way. I had downloaded the sample ages ago and never got around to reading it. But God moves in mysterious ways and when I did "feel like reading it" - it came at exactly the right time spiritually. I love this author's style of writing (The Bluebottle Club is brilliant!). The content was also historically informative. Learning about slavery and its ugly facets, its abolishment in law but not in the minds of many (the emergence of the KKK) - made for interesting but also at times upsetting reading. Families torn apart by the choices they make - the US civil war bringing out the best and worst in people. The inter-relationship between the great-grandmother and her great-grandchild unfolded beautifully. It is also extremely pleasant to read a book without expletives, unnecessary eroticism and with a godly (as in Scripture-influenced!) theme. There are many paragraphs which I read and re-read as I found them to be extremely profound - my favourite (no spoiler - refers to the brooch which is at the centre of the story): She said [describing the brooch]: The missing pearl "served as a reminder of the human condition - beautiful, yet flawed. Priceless, even in its incompleteness".

I really enjoyed Penelope Stoke's previous book: "The Blue Bottle Club" (which I had borrowed)...so I ordered "Amethyst Heart" also. I can't say I've read the "Amethyst Heart" yet because I was "forced" to loan it to the person to whom I borrowed the other book from but I will read it eventually and expect it will be just as good as the previous one. I do appreciate the speedy receipt of this book through Amazon. Thank you.

Not only does she continue to draw you into the lives of the characters she creates, you don't want to leave them. I was so taken with the characters of silas and pearl and the times in which they lived, I almost hated to see the story of that generation end and a new generation begin. Then the next generation becomes just as captivating. Penelope Stokes takes you into the gut wrenching history of prejudice in this nation, beginning with slavery, moving through discrimination and eventually civil rights. Miss Amethyst believes in doing what's right even when it seems impossible. By the end of this book I had both laughed and cried. It would make an awesome movie for the Hallmark Channel. Stokes demonstrates through her characters , a real model of christian character. This book will entertain you and convict you. Miss Amethyst was a well mannered lady but did not hesitate to speak truth. This along with The Blue Bottle Club are my two favorite Penelope Stokes novels although i would give them ALL 5 stars. Buy as many as you can, you won't be disappointed.

Loved it! A work of fiction BUT with a solid Bible, Christian message. Story covers a time of our history- pre and post civil war with clear understanding of the horrific plight of the slaves and the need to abolish. It was an amazing glimpse into how God can and will use His faithful people. It was also a great story of one family's heritage, filled with romance, struggles, heartaches, and perseverance.
I highly recommend.

Loved the book!

Although this book shifted from the current time to the past and back again numerous times, it did so with such ease that I longed to hear more of the history behind the Amethyst Heart. Set in the deep south, it showed this Yankee woman a deeper understanding of the plight of the African American people and showed how one white family fought to create a better world for all those involved.

Wonderful story and very well written!!
This was an amazing book incorporating stuff we all know about like the Klu Klux Klan, The Ï have a Dream Speech, the state of slavery in the South and so on. It is a story of hope, of love and of "real" people. I loved it.
