Father Gerhard Lohfink was professor of New Testament exegesis at the University of Tübingen. Since 1986, he has lived and worked as a theologian for the Catholic Integrated Community. His many books include Does God Need the Church? (Liturgical Press, 1999).

In 1971 Lohfink earned his doctorate with the dissertation The Ascension of Jesus: Studies on the Ascension and Exaltation texts in Lukas. The Last Day of Jesus. An Enriching Portrayal of the Passion. He habilitated (qualified as a teacher) in 1973 with his work The Collection of Israel: An examination of Lukan Ecclesiology. He was Professor of New Testament at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen until 1986. At the same time he continues his lectures. Since 2008, G. Lohfink has been working at the Pontifical Lateran University Chair of the Theology of the People of God, as well as the postgraduate distance learning program the chair offers since 2016 in German and since 2017 also in English.
In this very context there is constant talk about overpaintings and exaggerations of the person of Jesus by early Christian tradition.
This book is dedicated to the memory of Father Heinrich Bacht, SJ (1910–1986), in gratitude. He was professor of fundamental theology at the St. Georgen College of Philosophy and Theology in Frankfurt, and it was he who showed me the path to priesthood.
