Hans Urs von Balthasar (1905–1988) was a Swiss theologian widely regarded as one of the greatest theologians and spiritual writers of modern times. Named a cardinal by Pope John Paul II, he died shortly before being formally inducted into the College of Cardinals.

Hans Urs von Balthasar (12 August 1905 – 26 June 1988) was a Swiss theologian and Catholic priest who is considered an important Roman Catholic theologian of the 20th century. Balthasar was born in Lucerne, Switzerland, on 12 August 1905, to a wealthy family. He was educated first by Benedictine monks at the abbey school at Engelberg in central Switzerland.

The highly-respected Swiss theologian provides short, profound meditations on numerous scriptural passages throughout the New Testament. The simplicity and wisdom of these meditations demonstrates that, although he was a great theologian, von Balthasar was deeply interested in sustaining the spiritual lives of modern men and women.

This is not one's best or most characteristic introduction to von Balthasar, but it is arguably the finest collection of his concise meditations on scriptural texts. It cannot be skimmed; rather, it invites patient, meditative reading.
