Very difficult book to read, I went to school with the author..there were only two of us that first year..wish I knew she was dealing with some of the same issues..would love to go back to Amherst College and address this issue to an assembly of students, faculty and those in administration. I am still dealing with Complex PTSD from all that went on.

Lucia was my roommate and she was a nice woman but very messed up mentally. 95% of all the bad things that happened in her life when I knew her, were from her misunderstanding cues and having no interpersonal communication skills. She reacted to people in a completely naive way. Basic things needed to be explained to her both in conversation, as well as basic physical things like using a vcr (something she never mastered). She never owned a television or electronics, she never drove a vehicle, she never had a long relationship (although she was quick to talk about her celebrity liasons (no idea of the truth in them). There is nothing wrong with making these choices but hers were more of a naive absence of choices. Don't misunderstand, she was intelligent, but emotionally and communicatively, she was very stunted. Most of what you read in this book about her sexual harassment was grossly exaggerated by her sense of people always wronging her. She had a disturbing childhood and no family or friends in her life when we met. She needed an immediate place to live so I let her move in with me (I later found out that she had fabricated the reason she needed to move). She had a lot of trouble getting basic points across in conversations both personal and in the workplace and struggled greatly to understand those around her, which often led to her feeling slighted.
Sexual harassment is a real thing and court cases involving it are a terrible ordeal for those involved (victims), but don't put too much stake in her ficticious version in this book. There is a reason it's listed as fiction, not non-fiction.

I was the real life defense attorney portrayed in Ms. Butts novel. The novel is loosely based on alleged sexual harassment that she encountered while working for a transit agency that I represented in the mid nineties. I tried the case and the agency prevailed. The jury did not believe nor did they like Ms. Butts. While extremely bright, in my opinion she suffered from serious mental disorders and saw herself as an elite erudite victim that no one understood. She was not tuned into reality and like her life the novel is elaborately embellished, overwritten and long-winded. I felt sorry for her. To save costs, my client tried to settle the case with her but she sadly believed it was a six figure case. Sad life. May she rest in peace
