The patron saint of daydreams. I. On a windless summer day in an uncertain year, more than a century after the founding of Cornell, a man who told lies for a living climbed to the top of The Hill to fly a kite. He was a young man, a surprisingly wealthy one even for a professional liar, and he lived alone in a gaudy yellow house on Stewart Avenue.

I am a story-teller. Good story-tellers are avid “watchers.” They allow others to tell their stories and then sift through them for guidance, direction and encouragement. Fool on a Hill is a compilation of true-life adventures, often told by the actual players, but knitted together by the author, to provide valuable insight on moving through life successfully, or at least with hope. In these pages you will discover vital Tips for Travelers and make some life-changing friends.

I don't understand how this book has only received 5 star rave reviews. Yes, some of the stories are inspiring and endearing, but then there are quite a few others that are horrific. (Example - the pig stabbing episode recounted in the book.) In the context of treating folks who struggle with legitimate mental health issues, the story Stan Farmer relates here shows blatant abuse of folks who obviously needed a level of care greater than prayers alone could provide. There's a reason why doctors, psychiatrists, medication, and hospitals exist - they exist because they are a tool meant to be used in the treatment of mental illness and addictions. There are cases mentioned in this book that exhibited symptoms common with advanced stages of schizophrenia - not only were the methods applied to treat these symptoms potentially harmful to the person themselves, but it also put others in harm's way as the unpredictability of the person exhibiting the more violent symptoms could have ended in a serious assault or death. (Again, good example - that pig stabbing episode.)

To sum up the general theme of the issues in this book, this is sadly an excellent example of the dangers of approaching mental illness and addiction recovery from a purely faith-based standpoint without any incorporation of any medical or clinical treatment to help the sufferers on their journey to healing. There were some wonderful and inspiring stories in here but the reckless approach to how they treated the more severely ill folks is, from a humane, Christian, and clinical point of view, more than disturbing.

This is a memoir by the founder of a Christian ministry to addiction-afflicted youth. Knowing the author and many of the places/people he mentions enabled me to compare my impressions to his, making for an interesting read. Eschewing a chronological approach, his deft weaving of anecdotes throughout heightened my interest, and made for 'light' reading about a 'heavy' matter.
