William was born in The Hague in the Netherlands William returned several times to the Netherlands but found the English parliament reluctant to support his continuing war with France.

William was born in The Hague in the Netherlands. He was an only child and never knew his father William II who died of smallpox before his birth. His mother was Mary eldest daughter of Charles I of England. William was appointed Stadtholder (chief magistrate) and captain-general of the Dutch forces in 1672 to resist the French invasion of the Netherlands. William returned several times to the Netherlands but found the English parliament reluctant to support his continuing war with France. The Bank of England was founded in 1694 to control public expenditure. Williamsburg and the college of William and Mary in Virginia, were named after the King and Queen in 1693.

Victoria's beloved Albert is the only spouse of the reigning monarch to have been granted prominence in this otherwise superb addition to the Pitkin History of Britain series. Surely the choice of the royal spouse deserves more than 'also ran' status.

Fantastic book very easy to read, I find it very useful and the historical value is very accurate and interesting.

Pitkin puts out such great books! This book provides brief histories of the Kings & Queens of Britain. It's informative, and has some nice pictures. Grab this up, as it's hard to get in the U.S.!
