The previous volume ended with Churchill losing his position in the cabinet and even his seat in parliment. This volume goes through a couple of years that he was completely out of government, and his return to the cabinet as the chancellor of the exchequer for several years. He was involved with several key initiatives including returning England to the gold standard after WW I. He was then dropped from the cabinet for most of the 1930's but stayed on as an MP and more especially stayed in the public eye warning the world of Hitler and other threats. He stood almost alone during this time with his fears. The book ends with WW II starting and being put into the war cabinet of head of the Navy.

As with previous volumes, this is not a traditional history book, but a much more detailed review of events than what most people are used to. It is exhaustively researched and includes many quotes from Churchill and his friends and opponents. It gives you a great feel for his life and times.

I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting more details on Churchills life during the 20's and 30's. His character and energy are amazing.

There were many phases to the life of Winston Churchill; but this is perhaps the essential phase that transformed him from the unpredictable insider to the constant outsider/thorn in the side and ultimately, to the potential savior of his country. Those who are already familiar with the various biographies of Churchill are also likely aware of the quality of this series. However, for those who have an interest in Churchill but are looking for your first "serious" book- start here. Don't be scared away by the size- it's highly readable. It's also a fascinating story of a man who could sometimes juggle and balance; but kept to the goal as he best saw it. Read this volume, and you will likely start reading back and forward in the Churchill story.

This book and the volumes that precede it are slow going but if you enjoy history this series will give a look at Churchill's life and times through both world wars as well as the circumstances and political landscape before during and after with incredible detail .this volume is the third and deals with the time period between world war 1 and 2 the first volume is primarily about his early years the second deals with world war 1
. the author has sugar coated nothing taking much directly from and including many excerpts from Churchill's correspondence .being fond of history in general and this period in particular I have found this series fascinating and look forward to the remaining volumes

I'm giving "Prophet of Truth" four instead of five stars because it comes across to me as a bit disjointed. However over this period Winston seems to be about the only British subject close to government who recognized the aims of Hitler. He was as frustrated as many Americans are today who appreciate history and are aware of the minds of dictators. While many citizens recognized his gifts most in the government were jealous of his eloquence and vitality. This is the story of his patience and the governments blindness. If you're interested in the USA today this is a must read. History does repeat itself.

A very well done series of books on Churchill. If you are interested in history, this series is a must read. I wish anyone who wanted to run for office would have to read this series before they were allowed to run. I wished our politicians were students of history, we all would be better served.
