New to the Island from the great big Island, I wanted to know why some locals give me the stink eye. Yes you are right. Anyway, I was expecting a hyper cynical point of view with lots of condemnation. Blood and tears kinda stuff. Instead, I found myself almost at the same dinner table with a wonderful and brilliant woman. When she danced with men, she looked as though she loved each one of them. Lost in a maelstrom of outsiders plotting to take everything from her and her land, she wrote songs. The writer takes you back to a time of elegance and royalty in the kingdom, and ends with the destruction of the Hawaiian way of life. The book often reads more like a history book/Biography than anything else Has a few dry areas but is clearly worth five stars for accuracy and deep insights.

If you are interested at all in Hawaiian culture or government, you must read this book! Very long and a bit confusing, but luckily there are 2 glossaries: One of each character; One for each commonly used Hawaiian word. If you have ever visited the islands, it's good to know the history behind it. Excellent price, too! I'm enjoying every page of this fantastic book!

Content was probably OK, but the print was so small and of poor quality, I returned it. the return was easy with Amazon.

Very well written. Shows the other side of the story. The Hawaiian people have really been mistreated. The actions taken against the Queen were illegal and the President's orders were ignored. Greed was behind the dethroning.

This brought into light the complex heritage of the Queen. The conflict of her Victorian upbringing and her love of her country was illuminated as well as her poor treatment by the USA.

The book is an excellent piece of Hawaiian history and it's sad how the kindness of these innocent people were taken advantage of by the U.S. and it's representatives

As an old Hawaii hand, I knew a little about the last queen of paradise, but this is the full story.
