Seventy Years of Life and Labour: An Autobiography. Samuel Gompers was an English-born American labor union leader and a key figure in American labor history. 0875461123 (ISBN13: 9780875461120). This is not a book that you would want to read cover to cover but to dip in and move about, it is well worth it. The descriptions of the lower east side are worth the trouble of getting the book. The American labor leader Samuel Gompers was the most significant single figure in the history of the American labor movement. He founded and was the first president of the American Federation of Labor. Gompers is the subject of statuary in several major American cities. This is the first statue of a labor leader.
