The first occupant, William Graham Vivian, focused his attentions on alterations to the house, and made a new entrance drive on the S side. Clyne Lodge was built at the entrance to the drive and its design is said to be the reverse of a published drawing by P F Robinson (1776-1858), who had been employed by the Vivian family at Singleton Abbey.

Swansea castle had been damaged by Owain Glendower in the 15th century . It was finally demolished by the parliamentarians in 1647 to prevent it ever being used by the Royalists. On the other hand in 1682 a grammar school was founded in Swansea and by 1750 Swansea probably had a population of about 3,000. However, Swansea suffered severely in the bombing raids of the Second World War. In all 387 people were killed in Swansea and the heart of the city was destroyed. Swansea is still a busy port.
