Computer simulations have been developed to investigate the intramolecular cyclization of polyimides (.  . We develop and test a new elementary Monte Carlo move for use in the efficient simulation of polymer systems.

Computer simulations have been developed to investigate the intramolecular cyclization of polyimides (. imidization, the conversion of the precursor polyamic acid into polyimide). Imidization was examined as a function of time, temperature, and presence or absence of a silica substrate. To do this, the essential results of quantum mechanical studies were incorporated into a molecular dynamics simulation. The move consists of a concerted rotation around up to seven adjacent skeletal bonds that leaves the rest of the chain unaffected.
