A great book to keep on the desk as a quick reference when you're learning InDesign.

A great book to keep on the desk as a quick reference when you're learning InDesign. It doesn't go into great depth, and there's very little introduction if you have no idea what Indesign is for, but for the person who says "I know what I want to do but I don't want to read a 400 page book before I can do anything, just tell me how to do what I want to do", this. This book almost certainly won't tell you everything you need to know about InDesign, but it will quickly show you how to do the basics of pretty much every task you'll need while using the software, and if you then need more detail or depth, you'll at least know what to look for in the official help or a more.

Adobe InDesign CS4 On Demand is built from the ground up for today's diate-level graphic designer. Like every book in the On Demand Series, this book teaches visually, using an easy, friendly, full-color format designed to 'show how,' instead of 'telling ho.

Need answers quickly? Adobe InDesign CS5 on Demand provides those answers in a visual step-by-step format. We will show you exactly what to do through lots of full color illustrations and easy-to-follow instructions.

It was okay to work through. It's one of those books that are handy to keep if you're not good with googling information.

Very helpful book. However, the ebook version needs page numbers. When I look up an item in the index, such as the Pen Tool, I am given a page number. The ebook does not have numbers on the pages so finding the information is more difficult. For example, knowing an item is on page 32 does not help if I do not know which page is page 32.

Great reference book, just priced to high.

It is a great book! If you want to learn InDesign this is the book.

Great book. I have previous versions of "InDesign on Demand", and this one adds the new features that you need to know.

Very unclear and difficult to use. I've been trying for over a month and I find it to be close to useless. The files that are supposed to be used with the page per page projects are not specified and therefore one can not get much hands on practice through these projects at all. Useless. Sorry I bought it.

Adobe InDesign CC onDemand by Steve Johnson, Perspection, Inc. has got to be admired for its simple interface and step-by-step instructions that even a pet monkey could follow. It is possibly one of the easiest books to learn a complex topic from as it is flush filled with lots of visuals and tends to have one main idea per page. The book is beautiful to look at too, well structured, and tight with short definitions beside each illustrated step. If you are looking to fast track your learning of InDesign, then it is with this book I'd recommend you start.

Despite its simplicity, the book covers a massive breadth of information. Some of the highlights include the page tool for resizing business cards to letterhead (in short easy steps), clipping tools for inserting images inside text (p. 159), a plug-in recommendation to export EPub as Kindle (p. 453), means for creating labels for envelopes and variables for form letters (p. 416), tool for buying or getting free or paid for extensions (p. 541).

The book streamlines the process for making master pages, complete with page numbers and text variables. Also to note is the ability to make indexes at the back of the book, although InDesign's capabilities with indexing are limited in that they don't allow for live endnotes.

All the text basics are covered in depth, including one of my favorites, "wrapping text around an object", that looks especially beautiful in magazine style documents. Another great system is the ability to convert text to outlines, meaning that you can select points on the text and modify its shape. This has implications for sending your text to Illustrator, for instance, for gaining some 3D perspective or some altered components.

Gradients, shadows, bevels, emboss, feathers, and strokes are some of the effects that can be applied to objects in InDesign.

Of course, what is InDesign without the paragraph and character styles that really vamp up your projects to the next level? Object styles, nested styles, character styles, paragraph styles, table and cell styles are covered in detail.

Digital publications are discussed using the folio builder (which can also be used to build magazine apps that can be posted on Itunes, just in case you are the adventurous sort). Liquid layouts are discussed, which means your document will be fluid for iPads, iPhones, or the desktop computer screens.

Another highlight is the section on building interactive documents (such as a digital PDF) that allows you to create forms with active radio buttons and form fields that people can click on and enter date into. The creation of QR codes, which are those funny patterned squares that encode urls and email addresses for smart phones, are also easy to build through this book's instructions.

As a starting point for learning InDesign--especially as a good overview--Adobe InDesign CC onDemand is ideal. I am purchasing other onDemand books just because they always show an example of the interface and describe it as succinctly and clearly as humanly possible.

But don't venture into learning any Adobe product without subscribing month-to-month to Lynda.com --and thereby accessing David Blattner's terrific InDesign tutorials. He is a touted as a master in the field, and his video tutorials clearly demonstrate his proficiency. The video tutorials will make the learning process through the books that much more transparent, accessible, and efficient.

Overall, InDesign CC onDemand is indispensible for anyone serious about broadening their InDesign knowhow and is a highly useful as a first-stop learning point or as a reference book.
My son used this book along side sn online course in InDesign. The book is a great workbook like additional resource to help him review and remind himself of how to use the software
