Mark is also an Apple-certified instructor for Final Cut Pro X and Motion 5 and the author or coauthor of 5 books on Motion, including the Apple Pro Training Series Motion 5, all from Peachpit Press. I needed a good introduction to Motion and this was hands down better than wading through the dryness of Apple’s User Manual, and unlike Mark’s book up to date. Rated 5 out of 5. Jim H. Motion 5 is a very intense software program that has so much packed into it that no 1 book can teach everything. But this book is a perfect starting point to get you up and running. The included CD gives you the needed material which was easy to load onto my computer so that I could work along with the book. However a few of the lesson files fall a little short. By this, I mean that they have a few minor differences then the book states. But thats really easy to overcome. There have been a few updates to Motion 5 since this book was written but nothing that you can't figure out fairly quickly.
I paid the money for the Motion 5 training videos on Lynda dot com before i purchased this book. After finishing 80% of their course I was so confused that I quit and purchased this book. Glad I did because after reading only the 1st chapter of this book, I felt that it paid for itself. Now that I have finished reading all the chapters and I am amazed by how much I have learned.

Interface changes in version 5.3 have rendered this book difficult to use with the new version. Projects in the book require interface elements that are no longer present, and there is no obvious way to replicate the same functionality. Even after scouring the Apple Motion forum I can't figure out how to accomplish two tasks in Lesson 2 of this book - the image sequence and ".molo" files provided simply cannot be imported into the lesson project without the File Browser, which has been removed from the application.

Even after you register the book with Peachpit, You need to know the secret location to download the lesson files. Don't bother looking on Peachpit's site on the book's page. And don't look for it in the Getting Started chapter at the beginning of the book, which only tells you how to use the CD. I will give Peachpit points for rapid response to responding to help requests. A helpful person told me I had merely to look right before the index. Sure enough there is a chapter entitled Where are the Lesson files? I was able to download the files from there.

A bit more info Peachpit forgets to tell you. To load the files in to Motion, start Motion and look in the window on the lower left side where you see a directory tree. Navigate to the lessons. You can then load individual lessons into Motion as needed.

As I try out the book, I'll update this review. I hop it is a good as the other reviews.

Mark Spencer has designed an incredible course for Motion 5. Using a project approach he incorporates many aspects of Motion 5 features, controls, behaviors, animations - all the cool stuff and presented the material in a very easy to follow and very detailed manner. I think this is one of the best textbook approaches to complex material I have ever seen. Additional material in video form is available on his website and the two (book and web) are a perfect pair for learning Motion 5. Excellent book.

This is a great book for more in-depth concepts and examples. I bought Motion and played around for a couple of weeks, but was left needing more than youTube postings and online help. This book delivers. It works best when you follow the examples with the provided files. I would highly recommend this book if you want to really know the product.

I was disappointed in Amazon's shipping - the book was in a much larger box and had a torn cover and bent corners.

Good overview of Motion 5.

I was concerned that this book, published in late 2011, would be outdated (it is now Sep. 2013) as Apple has updated their program since the book was published, but was pleasantly surprised at how little info was out of date. I would say that 99% was correct. The one or two things I found were minor like the change of position of a button, or the renaming of a menu item. I had no trouble following along with the clear instructions. The author lays out the objectives of the lessons, and takes you step by step through the project, then has questions and answers at the end of each chapter to help you solidify your knowledge. He explains the Why along with the How.

The media and lesson files are easily downloaded (search for the word "zip" in your eBook and you will find the web address, it is near the back of the book.) and worked fine on my Mac. Also the kindle version downloaded and works fine in the kindle app on my iPad.

I also got the Apple Motion 5 Cookbook, but found I needed more foundation than it offered (I am a neophyte in motion graphics). I am almost done with Apple Pro Training Series: Motion 5 and when I finish I will go back to the Cookbook to see if it makes more sense. For me Mark Spencer's clear, thoughtful, and well paced lessons were just what I needed. And the lesson media was top notch and gave you a sense of accomplishment when you finished each one.

In regards to some of the other reviewers having issues with the shortcuts- I did not find that in my copy of Motion. F7 does bring up the HUD, for instance. Spencer warns you that if your keyboard preferences are set for other functions you may need to turn them off in the preference panel to get the Motion shortcuts to work right. Anyway, apparently YMMV.

This is for an older version, but same concept.
This book tells you a lot of the interesting things you can do with Motion 5. It is written as a high-level manual - it shows you how to do things once, with great detail, then it is up to you to follow up. A few of the chapters will have to be repeated for you to completely grasp the content.

It does not tell you everything you can do with Motion, that would be impossible as this is a program with almost no limitations.
