Once again this author has delivered. We bought this because we love his first book, as Irish expats in Canada we wanted a taste of home and the first book did this. We have tried a few of his recipes from this book and they are just as good. We recommend for Irish/British expats to get this for a taste of home takeaway!

If we are totally honest, how many of us can really say that takeaway food does not interest them a bit? Not even at the end of a very long day when you don't want to start cooking? Not even after an evening of liquid refreshment and you have the nibbles? Not even when the wonderful smell of frying onions can begin to transform the local air to that of a delicious gourmet bouquet...

But if you try and throw the "healthy eating" line as an objection then still there will be no excuse. Here author Kenny McGovern has returned with a further book of "takeaway secrets" that will allow you to make many of those oh-so-wonderful takeaway dishes at home. Now, of course, you still have the labour element and the need to have the ingredients at hand, but if you were in any way hesitant on healthy-eating grounds now there can be less of an objection as you can see exactly what is going into the recipe.

Naturally, there will be more calories in the dish than you would get with a stick of celery, but perhaps you will still make a healthier version than what you would get paying for often factory-produced foods warmed up at the local grill or bulk sauced items made with cheaper ingredients at the takeaway restaurant. Now, not all restaurants will warm up bulk produced food or use ready-made ingredients, but this book is not looking at that segment of the market!

This great little paperback book can find a space in every home and, one guesses, it might be a key favourite for the younger reader at large. The author has carefully ensured that he represents the ability to remake a generic dish, rather than an authentic copy of a known brand, so you are perhaps focussing on the overall dish and its experience rather than trying to recreate a particular look or taste that is exclusive to a specific chain. Not a bad thing.

Each recipe is quite easy to follow and one dubs this style of cooking "suitable for blokes" as it is a pinch of this, a bit of that and a few measures for good measure. Michelin-style restaurant food it isn't, but that is not a put down either. In reality most items will be substitutable if you really need to (better to have a pizza with a different topping than no pizza, better to have a beef burger made out of lamb than no burger at all). There are no pictures of the finished dish - not that they would add anything here - and if you don't know what your so-called favourite takeout looks like - assuming you have functioning eyes - then perhaps you overindulged on the liquid refreshment a tad or have the memory of a goldfish.

Everything is factual, to the point and ready for you to get cooking and focus on eating. No lengthy preambles, no lengthy retrospectives. Just the recipes.

For what it is, this is a cheap and cheerful little book. A sort of ready reference for when you have the munchies and want to eat takeout but want to either eat a little bit healthier, or cannot be bothered to go and fetch it. OK the lack of exercise could be a problem (but probably you'd drive or order home delivery) so why not save a few pounds in money, eat a little healthier and not put so much weight round the middle. Get cooking. You might even enjoy it and be inspired to try other non takeaway dishes...
