The civilization of ancient Egypt was indebted to the Nile River and its dependable seasonal flooding. The river's predictability and the fertile soil allowed the Egyptians to build an empire on the basis of great agricultural wealth. This was possible because of the ingenuity of the Egyptians as they developed basin irrigation.

Jane Shuter was a primary school teacher for many years before becoming a full-time writer of children's non-fiction. Ancient Egypt, a volume from the "History Beneath Your Feet" series, explores our knowledge of what life was like in ancient Egypt based on archaeological findings. She has written many books on ancient Egypt. Christa Hook is an experienced illustrator who specialises in history and military costume. I would recommend this series for elementary or middle schools and public libraries. Each page includes informative, easy to understand text with helpful explanations of more complicated concepts.

Well, this book uncovers that darker side of Ancient Egypt really brilliantly. It is something that I have also tried to bring out in my new book, because I think we often look at Ancient Egypt through rose-tinted spectacles: we are wowed by the pyramids and the temples, and we don’t often stop to think about the human misery that accompanied these great civilisations. This book is a useful tool to use in the task of re-balancing our interpretation of Ancient Egypt. Why do we find Ancient Egypt such an endlessly fascinating topic? What is it about it that entrances us and has entranced countless generations?
