A critically endangered (CR) species is one that has been categorized by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as facing an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild. As of 2014, there are 2,464 animal and 2,104 plant species with this assessment. As the IUCN Red List does not consider a species extinct until extensive, targeted surveys have been conducted, species that are possibly extinct are still listed as critically endangered.

Many different species have disappeared from our world already. Many more could follow them in the years to come, which is why it makes sense to be educated about them and how to minimize the risks.

Exploring the important legal, political, philosophical, and ecological issues surrounding endangered species in Canada, this book focuses on the historical and current contexts of such issues, obligations arising from international conservation agreements, and lessons for Canada from the experiences of other countries. In an accessible discussion of the key issues and of ideas for future policy initiatives, it provides an overview of the increasingly serious situation facing Canada's threatened wildlife.
