Surface areas, heats of adsorption, water vapor adsorption, surface structure, and infrared spectra were measured as a function of temperature up to 1200°C. Sintering, which occurred sharply at the quartz-tridymite transformation temperature, appeared to proceed by viscous flow. By correlation of water vapor adsorption and infrared data it is shown that water vapor physically adsorbs only on the silanol sites of the silica surface and not on the remainder of the surface.
