A history of the American fighter units which campaigned against the . I have two copies of this book

A history of the American fighter units which campaigned against the Luftwaffe in World War I. As a boy, Roger Freeman watched from his father's farm as the 8th Air Force took off for its missions over Germany; he has had a lifelong interest in the Mighty Eighth ever since, and now lectures on USAAF history, both here and in America. I have two copies of this book. I lent my first copy to a gentleman in his early 90's who flew bombers in WW2. He flew B-29s so he was not with the Eighth Air Force. My father flew in North Africa but not in Europe.

Is really thorough in covering the 8th during WWII. Freeman's book is an excellent look at the 8th Air Force in England - from its first arrival in late 1942 to its departure at the end of the war.

book by Roger A. Freeman. Second Library copy- San Diego Air and Space Museum. Is really thorough in covering the 8th during WWII. Both fascinating and full of meticulous detail. He writes so well that you actually feel as if you are there, riding along with the crews at 25,000 feet, in the harsh subzero atmosphere.

The seams of this book are too narrow to be scanned.

I have two copies of this book. I lent my first copy to a gentleman in his early 90's who flew bombers in WW2. He flew B-29s so he was not with the Eighth Air Force. My father flew in North Africa but not in Europe. In any case, I have read 100's of books about the air war in WW2. I have read accounts by British, U.S., German, and Japanese authors. This is a simple chronicle of the the largest air war ever fought (with the possible exception of the British bomber offense which was conducted at night during much of the same time period). There are other books that examine the strategic history in more detail but as an illustrated history of the units, bases, and missions of the Eighth, I don't think you can find a better account.

Great book! It even has colored diagrams of the planes used and camoflague carried by the different bomber and fighter squadrons that made up the 8th air force! So glad I got this book!

During a golden age of war histories, Freeman set the standard: numerous photos interspersed with detailed prose. If you are trying to research the travels of a relative in the Eighth, this is a good place to start. Individual units, and some of their stories, receive coverage.
In 1942, U.S. leaders started cautious strikes against coastal targets in occupied Europe. We know that they planned bigger, and in the beginning the Germans were unimpressed. Slowly, as ship convoys evaded the Uboat packs, 8th A.F. ground echelons, fuel and munitions flowed to the new bases in S.E. England. The planes made the flight over the North Atlantic following routes pioneered only a decade before. Raids on German targets became larger and more elaborate- however, Freeman notes mounting losses. This was a leader's dilemma: how do units gain experience without losing their key people? The introduction of escort fighters were an answer. They chased German units everywhere.
Washington had decided this was the best way to defeat Hitler. Precision bombing (as demonstrated by the Eighth crews) was the best way before physically marching into Germany. These airmen took the war to Germany (many making the ultimate sacrifice).

Arrived on time and in excellent condition. A big, comprehensive book with small print it will take some time to digest it. Looks like an excellent reference source for the 8th Air Force.
