The seventh edition has been revised to provide up-to-date design guidance, principles in line with the current British Standards and Eurocodes. The original simplicity of the mathematical treatment has been maintained, while more emphasis on the relevance of structural mechanics to the process of structural design, analysis, materials, loads on building and structures according to the current British Standard and European Code of Practice.

The initial chapters of the book deal with the concept of loads and their effects on structural materials and elements in terms of stress and strain. The significance of the shape of the cross-section of structural elements is then considered beforethe book finishes with the design of simple structural elements such as beams, columns, rafters, portal frames, dome frames and gravity retaining walls.

This is a great book for students who have just begun studying Civil Engineering. Im a Year 2 degree student, and have found this book to be extremely helpful in my Structures courses. A few chapters that I can single out that were important to me included: Chapter 2 (Loads on Buildings and Structures), Chapter 5 (Moments of Forces), Chapter 6 (Framed Structures),Chapter 8 (Shear Force and Bending Moment, Chapter 13 (Deflection of beams),Chapter 18 (Gravity Retaining Walls).

One point of note that i wasn't to pleased with was that in Chapter 13 (Deflection of Beams) the book didn't "talk" about McCaulay's Theorem, Moment of Area method or Conjugate Beam Method. It just generalized on the derivation of the deflection formulae and factors which contribute to beam deflection such as span,size and shape, stiffness,load etc. Of course this is important as well,however i have purchased two additional supporting texts on the subject. Don't expect to find every single aspect of structural analysis theory in this book, what it does is provide a good foundation on a wide variety of topics. I would recommend this book for entry level diploma and degree students. As you advance further along you will have to get additional supplemental texts for reference as I have.

Pleased with this book, gives a complete breakdown of the procedures to be taken for various designs and calculations. Will definitely recommend this book to any upcoming engineer
