Glamorous eccentrics are irresistible people. They are irreverent, occasionally impertinent, a tad mysterious, charming, often self-invented, good at applying eyeliner, and above all nonconformist. They are a fabulous confection of style, self-empowerment, and black patent sling backs. Everyone wants to be one, but how? Ubiquitous style guru Simon Doonan has the answer. By no means a typical how-to manual, Eccentric Glamour is a mixture of cultural commentary and personal disclosure, generously seasoned with gushings of wildly dictatorial, provocative, and reckless style advice. Through cautionary tales and inspirational examples, Doonan shows how to develop your own brand of eccentric glamour -- by magnifying everything that is already unique and idiosyncratic about you. In these comic essays, interspersed with one-on-one interviews with some of the world's most glamorous eccentrics (including Iman, Lucy Liu, Tilda Swinton, Malcolm Gladwell, and many more), Simon Doonan offers the women of America an alternative to the cheapness and tackiness that currently pass for personal style. Eccentric Glamour is intended as an antidote to the epidemic of slutty dressing and porno-chic that has taken over since the arrival of Paris Hilton and Anna Nicole Smith (may she rest in peace). While the typical TV boobs 'n' Botox makeovers force every woman to look the same, the transformations this book strives to inspire are the very opposite. Dressing like a ho is not just bad taste but boring! In Simon Doonan's book, conformity is the only crime and dressing down the only faux pas. Eccentric Glamour is every woman's birthright. SO SAY NO TO HO!...and yes to ECCENTRIC GLAMOUR!

If you are picking up this book as a traditional guide to dressing, you may be disappointed. There are quite a few of those out there and the advice is pretty much the same -- navy blazer, button down shirt, little black dress, hire a tailor and make sure your clothing fits, and it will usually end with a list of designers and stores in the back that most of us can't afford, save the usual nod to J.Crew. If you are looking for something a bit more philosophical than the usual "how-to", pick-up this book and prepare to have a laugh. Although Doonan admits to being label obsessed, and he knows his fashion better than the back of his hand, he is nevertheless democratic in his style philosophy.Eccentric glamour can be obtained by anyone, on any sort of budget. The biggest piece of advice is ultimately to be yourself. AND, for goodness sakes, stop dressing like a 'ho if you aren't a hooker!

I was looking for a how to / guide to developing your own eccentric style much in the same thread of Ines de la Fressange's book "Parisian Chic: A Style Guide"... this was not it. You pretty much have to keep a computer beside you as you read along to google each name the author drops as there are very few pictures and they are all headshots. This book is clearly written by a man who knows a lot of people in the NYC fashion world and loves wallowing in the fact that he knows them... yes he is funny, biting, and coy when he talks about them but that alone does not teach or encourage style.

Simon Doonan is very witty, original and likeable. Warning don't read this is public because it is laugh out loud funny! I had to stop reading late at night because I was waking my husband up with shaking our bed with my laughter. I am a fan of David Sedaris and have read all of his books. I was looking for more funny books to read and I found Mr. Doonan.

Although I am not sure everyone fits in Simon Doonan's 3 categories of fashion sense (Gypsy, Existentialist and Socialite), it doesn't matter. This book is great fun and had me laughing out loud all the way thru. I always read a little something from him when I need a pick me up!

I love his books! They make me laugh every time!
