With great wit and obvious devotion Thomas chronicles his rocky relationship with the "slightly food aggressive" and highly independent-minded Jake.

William Thomas clearly defines the relationship that we have with our pets and specifically his bond with his dog Jake. if you have a dog, this book is the best. i have read many dog books and this one is the greatest and funniest. It's a chuckle, then a laugh out loud little book.

Unless it's his birthday, really cold outside, really hot outside, really dark outside. Okay, the dog can live in the house and we'll sell the doghouse to a rookie dog owner who doesn't know the rules. But the dog never goes on the furniture. All right, maybe the old furniture. Okay, the dog can go on the new furniture until it looks like the old furniture, then we'll sell all the bloody furniture with the doghouse in a two-for-one deal. Once a cat person and the author of the bestseller Life in the Litter Box, Thomas explains: "Training a cat was easy.

Growing up, the only books my brother read were about dogs. When did it become a rule that writers had to kill off their characters' canine companions?

Growing up, the only books my brother read were about dogs. He loved Jack London, who kills far too many dogs for me to enjoy reading his work. When did it become a rule that writers had to kill off their characters' canine companions? In almost every "heartwarming" Bildungsroman, the scruffy boy's scruffy dog dies.

The Dog Rules is the tale of a wild and wacky adventure along the road of man and beast cohabitation. Thomas and his handsome Border Collie/Australian Shepherd pal Jake are the tour guides. It's just not quite clear who's got whom on the leash (though Bill is the one with the collar rash).

If you have a dog, know a dog, or ever had one leak on your lawn, you'll laugh out loud at the manner in which these half-humans really do love their way to the top and take over as head of the household.

This book is a quick read, and is absolutely hysterical. William Thomas clearly defines the relationship that we have with our pets and specifically his bond with his dog Jake. It's a chuckle, then a laugh out loud little book. Very enjoyable! I grew up in the area that he describes, and that makes it all that much more enjoyable, as he mentions the villages and nearby towns.
I will be looking for more of his books!

This is simply a "laugh out loud" fun book to read. If you're a dog lover, no matter the breed, you'll probably be able to identify with many of the humorous events in this book. As an added bonus, if you spent time in western NY and/or Ontario you'll probably recognize some of the landmarks. You'll want to share this one with family and friends.

Was disappointed in content. I'd been anticipating more "meat". In hindsight, would not spend my money here again.

William Thomas captures the true nature of the Dog/Man relationship. Most espically that relationship between a Border Collie and his human. These animals give unrestricted love and only ask that they be allowed to do anything they please.
And that comes across in this very funny book, it on many occasion made me laugh out loud; and I am sure many of the other guests in my hotel must of thought me insane.
But there is a warning, if like me you used to own a Border Collie (mine died at the age of 16 from a stroke) and have managed to keep the age old promise of the pet owner of never again, then at the end of the book (or even during) you may well be reduced to tears as you reminded of the antics of own beloved and now departed best friend.
