Overcome Menopause by Solving Your Hidden Thyroid Problems.

From New York Times bestselling author and nationally recognized patient advocate Mary J. Shomon comes a groundbreaking guide to safely managing menopause through a better understanding of and better care for your thyroid.

If you're one of the forty million American women struggling through menopause, you probably know all about the symptoms of fatigue, weight gain, and depression. But what you may not know is that the drop in reproductive hormones frequently triggers a thyroid slowdown—a "thyropause"—that can be the main cause for those troublesome symptoms. In fact, you may not even need hormone therapy, wild yam and progesterone creams, or herbs like black cohosh for a symptom-free menopause. What you really need is to begin to pay attention to your thyroid.

In The Menopause Thyroid Solution, Mary J. Shomon will help you:

Mary Shomon offers a wonderful overview of thyroid dysfunction and the menopause transition and provides many suggestions and resources on how to maneuver through these troubling conditions in The Menopause Thyroid Solution; however, I found the title a bit misleading as it addresses these two conditions in a distinctly compartmentalized fashion, with the first chapters dedicated to thyroid and the rest to menopause, rather than integrating the two sections together throughout as I was expecting. So in looking for an integrated approach to these topics, as seen from the perspective of women who suffer from them as well as those who treat them, I found it a little frustrating and disappointing at times. In particular, I would have appreciated a more thorough discussion on distinguishing menopausal symptoms from hypothryoid symptoms, and the logic behind the differentiation, but I found nothing more than a passing mention on this.

There was, however, a LOT of ink devoted to hot flashes, hot flashes, hot flashes. A search of my 391 page Kindle edition of the book turned up 179 matches on the search for "hot flashes", compared to a paltry four for "sagging", 48 for "hair loss" and 30 for "weight gain". She does include a section on hair loss though, and it's quite informative for someone who is totally new to the concept of losing hair in menopause (I am, unfortunately, painfully well versed in that topic, so nothing much new here for me).

Needless to say, I flipped through the hot flash pages in desperate hopes of finding some coverage - any coverage - about the presentation of specific symptom sets, including those that I am experiencing and how, using actual case studies, how those women deal with them, how common they are, etc. etc. Nada. My problems, for the record, began with losing more than 1/2 of my hair when I turned fifty, followed over the next three years with a tremendous loss of skin elasticity, losing my muscle tone, gaining fat, and watching everything to sag and wrinkle seemingly overnight, despite having followed a healthful diet (not the S.A.D) for many years, exercising, not smoking, etc. etc. In an incredibly brief amount of time, I was transformed from a youthful 50 to a thinning, shapeless, depressed total stranger.

I would trade 24 hours of hot flashes for three and a half years or any other temporary symptom of menopause and hypothyroidism than this living hell. So when I got to the section about keeping a positive attitude, I wanted to rip it out and burn it. I couldn't though, since as I said, I bought the Kindle edition. Don't get me wrong though, I think this is worth a read for the average menopausal hypothryoid woman who isn't going through extreme symptoms. I was looking for more info than I could get from my own doctors, which isn't a lot, as they've written it off as aging and hormonal issues due mainly to menopause rather than the thyroid. One of the best things about the book is that there is lot of food for thought here than you might want to follow up on with your own research, regarding recommendations for supplements, exercise, etc. etc. But I still need to keep looking to try and help make sense of exactly what is going on and why. Another recommendation I would make for anyone in a similar predicament, suffering from both thryoid and menopause related issues, is to find a function medical practitioner to help work through issues one on with you.

I still can recommend this book as a good resource and primer for those just being thrown into this incredibly difficult phase of life, and then building your knowledge from here with some things you will learn from the book.

So far this book is very interesting. There is a lot of new information in this book that will help me in the future with both my Thyroid and menopause. This is the second book by Mary J. Shomon that I have purchased, both have been very informative (The first book was "The Thyroid Diet Revolution"). Thank you for writing these books Mary J. Shomon. I will be having a discussion with my physician very shortly, due to the fact that he is not handling my thyroid treatment correctly. For anyone looking for a very helpful book for dealing with both the thyroid and menopause, this is it!

It was good if it is your first time reading about the topic. For anyone who already knows a bit about hormones and thyroid this might not be for you.

This book has opened my eyes to what is going on with me regarding menopause and hypothyroidism. Because of this book I am calling my endocrinologist tomorrow and request desiccated hormone instead of this Synthroid crap.
Thank you Mary for helping me understand and research on my own.

This is a great book. More MD's should read; they need to know how to step out of the box to help women.

Lots of helpful info, nutritional advice as well as exercise info included (instruction) right in the book. A big help for IDing thyroid related issues and helping to manage symptoms wisely.
There is lots of info that most can find on their own. But it seems a lot was repeated also.
