Marguerite Henry published her first children's book, Misty of Chincoteague, in 1947, and published more than forty books in her lifetime. She won the Newbery Medal in 1948 for her second book, King of the Wind, and both Misty of Chincoteague and Justin Morgan Had a Horse are Newbery Honor books.

Both the book and the movie have been criticized for containing a number of historical inaccuracies and for creating or perpetuating some myths about both Justin Morgan and Figure. One equine historian stated, "these should be looked upon not as true happenings but as entertainment vehicles.

Justin Morgan Had a Horse is a children's historical novel by Marguerite Henry, illustrated by Wesley Dennis and published by Wilcox & Follett of Chicago in 1945. It concerns horse-breeding in Vermont in the late eighteenth century. It was one runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1946 (a Newbery Honor Book in later terms). The Library of Congress catalog records report 89 pp. and 169 pp. respectively.
