Book theme: Halloween. Street Date: July 28, 2009. Tom Brenner says of his inspiration for And Then Comes Halloween, his first book for children: "I watched October dress up for one last colorful romp before winter and felt the wild energy that sends kids out wearing capes or weird hats to rule the street for a night. And Then Comes Halloween, by Tom Brenner, with illustrations by Holly Meade, is as sweet a marriage of words and pictures as you could hope for. In this book the magic day arrives slowly, step by step with deepening autumn, and the job of a family is to get ready. Their schedule is cued not by back-to-school sales and advertising inserts but by signs from the world outside: When nighttime creeps closer to suppertime, and red and gold seep into green leaves, and blackberries shrivel on the vine. then hang dried corn, still in husks all crinkly and raspy, sounding like grasshoppers.

All too often Halloween books for kids focus on the candy and scary costumes, but Brenner's lyrical language recalls the innocence and fun of Halloween. The book's a joy to read to students, and the artwork is perfectly paired with the words. One of my favorite read-alouds each Halloween season.

Incidentally, the author does school visits in the Pacific Northwest for a very reasonable amount. He came to our school and was super-flexible in working with different grade levels and classes. More importantly, he really seemed to be there for the kids and to help them become better writers, not just to sell his books. I can't recommend his visits highly enough.

The perfect book for introducing young kids to Halloween! My little guy is three and this year as we trick or treated we quoted this book and "swirled from porch to porch". It is an interesting read that doesn't get old after the fifth time in the week. It reads more like a poem than a story and I think that's what makes it more versatile than a regular children's book. I think our family conversations about fall will forever include some lines from this book like "when nighttime creeps closer to supper time" and "when the wind whispers winter". A must have in your seasonal stash!

I'd heard this childrens' Halloween book was very good, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a debut author and noted illustrator collaborated in such a wonderful new approach to a childrens' book!

The prose brings back memories to most adults and is very authentic to children. The graphics / art is so very well matched to the story.

A MUST BUY for children of all ages (3-93) and a great Christmas gift.

Don't let this one slip away. And Then Comes Halloween

My 3-year-old's favorite Halloween book! The language is really lovely. It's the perfect depiction of Halloween night for little children, and captures the excitement of preparing in the weeks before.

I got this book to explain Halloween to my 2 year old, hoping he'd get excited with me and think about what he wants to be. The story is great and the illustrations are beautiful. Some of the wording is a bit clunky but the charm of the book overrides that. I really enjoy it, my son enjoys it, and after a week of asking to read it, he knows how to get candy on Halloween (say trick or treat!).

Wonderful Halloween book. The kids love finding the cat on all the pages. We will pull this one out each Halloween and read it to get in the mood.
I read the other good reviews on this book prior to purchasing it and my daughter loves it, also! I will keep it with our Halloween stuff so every year, it will be special and exciting to read again.
