Rosemary Wells (born January 29, 1943) is an American writer and illustrator of children's books. She is well known for the Max & Ruby series, which follows the everyday adventures of sibling bunnies, curious three-year-old Max and bossy seven-year-old Ruby. Wells has also written Noisy Nora (1973), Yoko (1998), the Voyage to the Bunny Planet series, a Christmas book called Morris's Disappearing Bag (1975) and a collected book of illustrations of Rodgers and Hammerstein songs.

Max is the little brother of Ruby and one of the main characters in the kids television show Max And Ruby. Max has appeared in every book and episode of Max And Ruby Adventures. Max and Ruby is a Canadian animated series that debuted in 2002 (following a pilot episode in 2001) that is aimed at a preschool audience. Created by children's book author/illustrator Rosemary Wells and based on the world of her Max and Ruby books, the episodes present stories about Max, a rambunctious and determined three-year-old rabbit, and his big sister, Ruby, a patient, goal-oriented, sometimes restrictive seven-year-old rabbit. A pilot episode for this series aired in 2001 and the program appeared.

Despite his big sister Ruby's best efforts to teach him to say "Cup," "Egg," and "Apple," the very first word out of young Max's mouth is "Delicious."

A fun book for children and a good laugh for Mom and Dad (or whoever is reading the book), too! A little comedy in the stressful daily life with toddlers is always welcome. This book provides that, as well as colorful illustrations. One of my all time favorite children's board books.

She is so gifted in subtly showing emotion with the position of the ears, tilt of the eyes... As always with Wells, a hilarious ending!

This was always one of our children's favorite book. We still quote from it 45 years later. It is cleverly humerous, first books, first words.

"Bang," said Max has been a family expression for many years, but we lost or gave away our copy "Max's First Word" years ago. The book is as wonderful as we remembered. The particular copy I bought was in pretty ragged shape, but I knew that would be the case - it only cost 99cents. And that the book was well used tells me that someone else loved it as much as we do.

This is a wonderful book. Wells is brilliant at getting across a funny, witty story in so few words. This is the first book that made my baby daughter laugh! (My sound effects--I bang the book when I say "bang"--no doubt help!) I choose this book a lot for other babies and toddlers.

Twenty-five years ago my son couldn't sleep without Max and his first word. Terrific book for children - Max is so intelligent and independent!
