The Romans didn't really eat it, usually consuming only one meal a day around noon, says food historian Caroline Yeldham. They were obsessed with digestion and eating more than one meal was considered a form of gluttony. In fact, breakfast was actively frowned upon. The Romans believed it was healthier to eat only one meal a day," she says. This thinking impacted on the way people ate for a very long time. A brief history of brunch.

My 3 year old loves this book! She likes the colorful photos, text and the open ended questions it asks. Some examples are, What time do you eat lunch?, What do you drink with lunch?, and What do you eat on hot summer days?. She enjoys answering the questions and asking about the different kinds of foods in the photos. I think this is a great book because it really encourages her to think critically about the questions and even about different foods she has never seen. There is a Note to Adults section in the back of the book that offers more helpful tips and activities if your child is really interested in food or lunch. i bought it at the bargain price for a little over 2 bucks, and really recommend it to all the little foodies out there. :)

Designed for preschoolers this title and the other books in the series are constructed around a number of questions set off by large color photos. The child should be old enough to respond to the questions (What's your favorite sandwich?). Check the back of the book for hints on how adults can make this a more meaningful read.

If you want an interactive book (the questions) that gets a conversation going about healthy food this would be a good selection. You might top off the reading session by asking your child what he or she wants for lunch that day.
