SARAH GARLAND is a much-loved author and illustrator who has published more than 50 books

SARAH GARLAND is a much-loved author and illustrator who has published more than 50 books. The daughter of a publisher and illustrator, she trained as a typographer at the London College of Printing. Her books for Frances Lincoln include the favourite preschool Going and Doing series, the bestselling Eddie series and Azzi in Between, which was winner of the first Little Rebels Book Award in 2013 and was also chosen as an IBBY Honour Book and as an Outstanding International Book by USBBY.

Coming to Tea follows Mum and the children as they invite the family next door to tea, blow up balloons, make jam tarts and biscuits and enjoy all the treats together. But will the weather spoil the party? Get A Copy.

Sarah Garland's books could not find a French publisher because her mothers were judged insufficiently chic. There is a lanky dog in the 'Coming and Going' books (the Society for Retired Greyhounds wrote to salute her for including him). What French madame would be seen in a shapeless green duffel coat, pushing a buggy uphill, with the baby's bottle (lid off) peeping out of her pocket? Garland is one of the best and most sympathetic chroniclers of English family life precisely because her pencil doesn't lie about the slog of bringing up children. She modestly quotes a Thomas Hardy line to describe her work as 'humbly recording unadjusted impressions'.

Sarah Garland creates books for children whose families are busy and noisy

Sarah Garland creates books for children whose families are busy and noisy. Is there any other kind? In Coming to Tea, a plant pot is knocked over, hair is tangly, grass overgrown, a baby fills a nappy. Who cares? Two mums turn tea-time into a party. Garland's drawings are anarchic and jolly, and capture the reality of domestic bliss.

Sarah Garland is the author of several exciting children's titles, including & on the Run', & Survival of Arno Mostyn' and & on the Barn', which was shortlisted for the Smarties Children's Fiction Award. She lives near Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

The moral right of the author has been asserted. Mrs Barber came after her, stepping carefully up into the porch. But there was nothing else for it, if the house were to be kept going at all. With a determined smile she went closer to the van, wanting to help. The men wouldn’t let her. ‘You mustn’t think of it, Miss Wray. At the threshold itself, however, she hesitated, leaning over the ferns in her arms to look into the hall, and to smile.

Mum’s invited the family next door over for tea. So much to do! There are balloons to blow up, cookies, cake, and jam tarts to bake, and of course, the house must be tidied. Coming to Tea follows the adventures of Mum, her little daughter, the baby, and the ever-present family dog as they get ready for their outdoor party. But now that the neighbors have arrived, will the weather spoil the fun? Garland’s whimsical yet realistic illustrations, filled with homey, familiar details, are the perfect complement to this amusing story.

Beautiful book from my childhood. The wear and tear from the copy we had when I was little, plus my children using it caused me to buy another copy. This hardback is slightly different than my original but it's still a great book. Lovely memories of England:)
