Rodda's usually absorbing series about a humble animal tender who repeatedly saves his isolated people loses some steam in this new episode. When a preternaturally savage winter forces the folk of Rin out of their homes, Rowan stays behind-impelled by both a vague rhymed prophesy and by the sudden advent of huge, toothy snow worms dubbed "ice creepers" to follow his beloved, ox-like bukshah up into the looming mountains.

"Four must make their sacrifice. In the realm twixt fire and ice . . . The quest unites both life and death."

The wise woman Sheba's ominous words haunt Rowan. The bitter winter has lasted far too long and won't loosen its deadly hold on the land. As food stores dwindle, the people of Rin flee to the warmer coast.

Rowan and two friends -- and a shadow -- journey up the mountain that towers over Rin to seek the source of the unending cold. Rowan knows from past experience that the mountain is unpredictable and harbors many dangers. But now waves of freezing air stream down its sides. And ferocious ice creepers -- giant eyeless creatures with gaping jaws and teeth like shards of ice -- slither from its shadow eager to devour any warm being.

Will Rowan and his friends somehow be able to bring spring -- and life -- back to the land? Can they survive the perils of the mountain and the attacks of the ice creepers?

I will need to return this copy because the cover is torn or cracked away from the pages.
I believe these books are poorly made from the start. The copy I owned before I saw this
copy has the same damage.

This is the last of the Rowan of Rin series book and it's the perfect story for fiction/adventure lovers of all ages.
Not filled with quite as much excitement as I hoped - but sufficient! Winters in Rin have been growing steadily colder and longer, and now it is too cold too bear. Rin moves down to the coast, leaving a few behind. Rowan begins another quest, this time to banish the evil Ice Creepers and warm the land once more. He and two others follow the Bukshah through the mountain, discovering evil things. Finally they discover the secret of the Mountain - and another one as well, one concerning the ancestry of the people of Rin.
