Cynthia Rylant (Author), Peter Catalanotto (Illustrator). In her free time, she devoured Archie comic books and paperback romances and enjoyed the outdoors. But after taking one college English class, she was, hooked on great writin. didn’t know about this part of me until I went to college-didn’t know I loved beautiful stories. And one night, inspired by the Southern writer James Agee, she sat down and wrote When I Was Young in the Mountains.

One night his solitary wanderings take him into a restaurant where he reads these words on the menu: ''The Westway Cafe - where all your dreams come true. A soft-voiced waiter (metaphorically named Angel) welcomes him and invites him back. This picture book is written by children and adolescent book author Cynthia Rylant, who has also written such treasures as The Van Gogh Cafe and Missing May. In this picture book, an elderly gentleman from the Midwest lives in a hotel for men in New York City.
by Peter Catalanotto and Cynthia Rylant. Solomon Singer lives in a men's shelter in Manhattan's Upper West Side. Very little is known about Solomon's background other than he is an Indiana native. This, however, proves to be a very effective tool in the telling of this story. Lonely, longing for the natural joys of birds and countryside as he knew in Indiana and a friendly person to talk to, Solomon takes to going for walks during the day. A creative man, he dreams of being able to paint the dingy walls at the men's shelter purple; he yearns for freedom of decision making that he does not have at the shelter.
The author us "An Angel for Solomon Singer" is a wonderful story about an elderly man who is lonely. I bought this book when my children were little and Peter Catalanotto came to their elementary school as a presenter. He lives in a hotel with no balcony, or any other standard feature that comes with an apartment. He roams the streets and thinks about his childhood memories in Indiana. Of course all of Cynthia Rylant's children's books are true "keepers". Love them all but this one is about an old man who is alone, and lonely in the big city.
