The US has had quite a few inept presidents – usually it doesn’t matter so much

The US has had quite a few inept presidents – usually it doesn’t matter so much. Having read the books in the American Presidents Series through Pierce, I found Holt’s biography one of the clearest, well-written and insightful so far. Holt manages to telescope a great deal of material into 133 pages of text and he does it in a fluent and informative way. Strong writing skills, especially excellent transitions, make this book work. Holt makes a good case that Pierce’s failures as president came from a single-minded attempt to maintain the unity of the Democratic Party.

I read the book Franklin Pierce Our Fourteenth President by Steven Ferry. Franklin Pierce was born in Hillsborough, New Hampshire on November 23, 1804. Pierce later graduated from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. He was one of their best students and later began to practice law.

Pierce married Jane Means Appleton on November 10, 1834. Jane was quiet, shy, and very religious and Frank was fun and outgoing. Years later he had a son Franklin Junior that died three days after he was born; it was one of the many personal tragedies that happened to them throughout their lives. Then a few years later he had Frank Robert. In 1841 Pierce had another son named Benjamin. Two years later tragedy struck, Frank Robert died. He was just four years old. It was another sad time for the Pierces.

After that, Pierce signed up to fight the Mexican-American War as a Brigadier General. Pierce had no experience in the military and was not a great solider. In one battle he was knocked from is horse unconscious. And in another battle he twisted his ankle and fainted. Some of the solders called him “fainting Frank.” He then left the army feeling he should have been a better soldier and returned to his family. His friends then suggested he should run for president. Jane was so upset she fainted. And then later he was elected President in November 1852.

Tragedy struck another time when Jane and their son Benjamin were in a train and it went off the tracks. Benjamin Pierce was killed right before Jane’s eyes in a train accident. And luckily Jane had only some minor injuries.

In 1857 Franklin Pierce left the presidency. Later on Abraham Lincoln was elected and Franklin’s wife Jane dies, Civil War ends and Abraham is shot.

Franklin Pierce dies in Concord, New Hampshire in 1869 and is buried with the rest of his family at the Old North Cemetery in Concord.

I will soon be going to the home of Franklin Pierce and his where he was buried at in Concord, New Hampshire. And I will write another thorough report on my investigations on that historical site.

I enjoyed the book very much. I would recommend that you read it.
