The US has had quite a few inept presidents – usually it doesn’t matter so much
The US has had quite a few inept presidents – usually it doesn’t matter so much. Having read the books in the American Presidents Series through Pierce, I found Holt’s biography one of the clearest, well-written and insightful so far. Holt manages to telescope a great deal of material into 133 pages of text and he does it in a fluent and informative way. Strong writing skills, especially excellent transitions, make this book work. Holt makes a good case that Pierce’s failures as president came from a single-minded attempt to maintain the unity of the Democratic Party.
