All the little creatures have a part in the Baby in the Manger play, except Little Porcupine

All the little creatures have a part in the Baby in the Manger play, except Little Porcupine. They all say he is too funny looking to have a part. But his mother tells him he is the light of her life, and on the night of the play, he gets an unexpected part in which he can truly shine. This book was unexpectedly adorable! I was hooked on the first page, when Little Porcupine gave his mama a "big, pinchy hu. The other animals ridicule him for being a "stick ball" and won't let him have a part in the "Baby in the Manger" play, but his mother calls him "the light of my life. He gets his chance to be the star of the play when the animals forget to put up a Christmas star.

You could even expand on the skit with your own funny lines in a similar fashion to incorporate the number of kids you have in your group. This entertaining play would work well for any group, including adults. The lines are a little too advanced for grade school children to memorize, but they would still enjoy viewing the play. The play centers around Santa trying to fill stockings and leave presents, but with a humorous twist.

This is a wonderful book, but beware, it is abridged. It is not the same as the original How Little Porcupine Played Christmas. Some key parts are missing. I can't imagine why they'd change it, but it is changed. If you can find it, get the original. If you can't, this is still a great book.

This is an ABRIDGED version of "How Little Porcupine Played Christmas." It is still charming but it is not the full book. I'm just alerting you. "How Little Porcupine Played Christmas" is my favorite picture book of all time. Otherwise, I agree with all the praise lavished on the book. I use this book when I teach how to tell a story in the best possible way!

Perhaps the finest Christmas book I've ever read. Incredibly touching and sweet, great messages about perseverance and seeing the good in those around you. Warning: this book will make 100% of adults tear up, based on a sample size of four.

Call me crazy... but what are all these great reviews talking about?? One mentioned this being an abridged version and it MUST be-- it seems like a whole chunk of the storyline must be missing because I don't see how all these other reviewers choked up reading this? Or how it shows "the real meaning of Christmas."

Usually when I order a book for my kids, I let them open it when we check the mail and we read it together right away- I am SO glad that I opened it and screened it first. The opening scene sets up the story well, and you can see how it leads to the big ending, but in this version all of the inbetween is just the other animals making fun of the porcupine and calling him names. And let me state, we aren't parents that shelter our kids from unpleasant storylines, we use them as teaching moments.... but the WHOLE THING was just making fun of this porcupine and then there was no real conflict resolution, no apologies, no reference to "the real Christmas" meaning... I honestly think that even if I inserted some fluff here and built the storyline up with my own commentary while reading, my kids would still just walk away with new ways to call each other names.

This is a great book to teach the real meaning of Christmas. For all ages because every Mom has "the light of her life".
The book arrived in exceptionally good condition. The story has been re-titled from the 30 year old book. It was something like How Little Porcupine Did Christmas.....wonderful story.
