This is the second Max the spaniel book we've read. We bought the first Max book at the school book sale last year. My daughter loved Max's hunt around the yard for dinosaurs. This book follows Max and his cat friend's adventures in opening a diner. It's hilarious. I've always loved this author's great illustrations. He has a definite exaggerated style that is easy to pick out. His goofy funny illustrations really make any children's book a lot more fun to read. I'm excited his writing career is going as well as his illustrating career. I look forward to more great books with Max's adventures. Max is a dog not contented to just sit around the house.

My four year old son absolutely cannot get enough of this book. It's been his favorite for at least a month now. He loved the first book in this series, Dinosaur Hunt, but Funny Lunch has been even more popular.

Max Spaniel is a completely adorable dog. The jokes in the book are just right for young kids to get, and Max's bumbling antics are really quite cute.

The book's a quick read (out loud) and I haven't minded reading it to my son several times in a row. We love Max Spaniel!

My boys (age 5 and 7) thought this was pretty good, not great. But they LOVED Dinosaur Hunt by same author. Dinosaur Hunt was funnier to us and is one of our 10 or 15 favorite all-time kids books. Max is a great character in both books.

"Too silly" is my giggling six year old's verdict of Funny Lunch, by David Catrow. That's a great recommendation, if ever I've heard one. If you have a kindergartner or first grader who's reading one or two sentences on a page, find this book. The humor will have them coming back for more. Catrow successfully mixes simple words and sentences with detailed, over-the-top pictures. Also check out his other Max Spaniel book: Dinosaur Hunt.
My almost 3 year old daughter LOVES this book! Definitely have to buy the rest of the Max spaniel books this xmas.
