She recently discovered Roald Dahl through her school librarian, and subsequently, she enthusiastically enjoyed James and the Giant Peach. When she asked for more by the same writer, Matilda became her first chapter-book download to her Kindle. She is loving it just as much and is in the e-book every night.

The BFG (short for The Big Friendly Giant) is a 1982 children's book written by British novelist Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. It is an expansion of a short story from Dahl's 1975 book Danny, the Champion of the World. The book is dedicated to Dahl's late daughter, Olivia, who died of measles encephalitis at the age of seven in 1962.

Other books by Roald Dahl. Boy: tales of childhood. THE BFG: PLAYS FOR CHILDREN (Adapted by David Wood) CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY: A PLAY (Adapted by Richard George) FANTASTIC MR FOX: A PLAY (Adapted by Sally Reid) JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH: A PLAY (Adapted by Richard George) THE TWITS: PLAYS FOR CHILDREN (Adapted by David Wood) THE WITCHES: PLAYS FOR CHILDREN (Adapted by David Wood) Teenage fiction.

The BFG won the Federation of Children's Book Groups Award in 1982. More than 30 years later, The BFG remains a much-loved character. In 1989 it was turned into an animated film featuring the voice of David Jason. And of all his stories, Roald Dahl said that The BFG was probably his own favourite Danny, the Champion of the World.

The BFG is a big friendly giant who spirits a child out of bed one dark night. Roald wrote about these experiences in his books Boyand Going Solo. Later in the war Roald Dahl was sent to America. Fortunately, he really is friendly, but his countrymen in the Land of Giants are inveterate child-eaters. In Africa he learnt to speak Swahili, drove from diamond mines to gold mines, and survived a bout of malaria where his temperature reached 10. degrees (that's very high!).

ty of humor for adults (the way BFG interacts with normal humans, particularly over things like table manners, is classic example) There is also a dark under-current not scene in children's literature (it is a story about giants who like eating children)

Wow - if one would buy books by the pound, this would surely be a great deal. Bought by the page, close to 900, it is, too.
Bought for the enjoyment these stories offer - a best buy :-)
Most parents have read Roald Dahl's books as youngsters themselves and later to their own children and grandchildren with much enjoyment,or they have watched some of the children's stories made into movies.
However, this 'OMNIBUS' or collection of his stories for grown ups is quite different. The byline is' Perfect bedtime stories for sleepless nights'.
As an avid reader, short stories of many kinds make great reading when on the run. These stories at times shock, have you ponder on the fickleness of humanity, add some humor and of course have you delight in the excellence of this wordsmith. ENJOY!

I am a ten-year old girl and I thought The BFG was a great book. I loved how some of the chapters made me laugh out loud. It was a very creative book and I always looked forward to reading it. I've read many books and The BFG was definitely one of my favorites. I decided to read The BFG because I saw an advertisement on TV for the movie. I'm glad I did! I would definitely -and no question about it- recommend it to a friend!

One of the best kids' books ever written. The BFG is a lovely creature whose demeanor and presence validates young readers' fears without pandering or being overly scary. Dahl had a great eye for the ludicrous in the world and invites kids in on the ridiculousness. A joy to read aloud, for as long as the young reader will let you! They almost always want to take it on for themselves before you want to let it go. Get your own copy, mom, dad...

My brother had this book when we were growing up. At the time, I would read anything I could get my hands on. I was immediately drawn in to Roald Dahl's amazing storytelling. Now that my daughter is a teen, I was telling her about this book. I was able to find it gently used on Amazon for a really good price. Now she's enjoying these stories too

This is a six-star story by one of the all-time best authors ever. My 6-year old says it is his favorite book in the world so far and has been using words like scrumdiddliumptious for the last week we have been reading it.

However, the copy of the book I received new gets one start because it IS MISSING THE MIDDLE 32 pages!!! I just got to page 95 reading out loud to my 6-year old, and the next page in the paper-back is 193! The book proceeds 193 to the end including the ads for other Roald Dahl books, then goes page 129 through to the end again, including a repeat of the 193 onward section. Pages 96 through 128 are missing entirely. This kind of misprint happens sometimes, but it is such a bummer in the middle of the story! I wish Amazon could send me the kindle version so I can get back to our favorite bed-time story tonight, and eventually a replacement paperback so we can have a complete copy for our younger child when he is old enough for it!

I just saw the musical production, Matilsa, and thought it so clever I wanted to find its source. The book is a bit different from the play but what a great and fun author is Roald Dahl. I had no idea he also wrote James and the Giant Peach so I was thrilled to find several of his books which all shipped together and arrived within a week of my order. I look forward to reading this volume of which I had no prior knowledge. I am happy and delighted with the product and the seller.

When I realized my younger son (15 years) had somehow missed reading this book, I ordered it for him to read before seeing the upcoming movie. My two older children had such fond memories of the book that they ended up reading along with my younger son...a family read-aloud! The book itself is a nice-sized print, with engaging black and white sketches throughout that add to the story. This is a great book.
Truly enjoyed the book although it took a little getting used to the giant's language. Once I got the hang of it, it was quite entertaining. My granddaughter, who is an avid reader in 2nd grade, was thrilled to get the book. She loves the giant's language and now makes up her works while playing. To funny trying to guess what the words are.
