My 6 year old and I really enjoyed reading this book together on our Kindle. It’s one our favorite Magic Treehouse books! We were lucky to have just seen a local performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream the day before we started reading this book. But it can certainly be enjoyed with zero background knowledge of Shakespeare’s work. My son loved how Will taught Jack to conquer his stage fright by teaching him to take deep breaths and use his imagination (something we do at home to help with fear of the dark). He was so relieved when Annie saved Dan the bear from a tragic fate.

One of my favorite things about this book was all the interesting discussions it spurred. We talked about words and phrases that were new to my son, like “I have had a most rare vision,” “‘tis,” and “Merry Olde England.” And we both were interested enough in the bits of history of London that were presented to start a google search for more. My kid was especially fascinated to learn about the origins of the song “London Bridge Is Falling Down” from this book.

My kids (and I) love this series, and they are always begging to read the next book every time we finish a book. For us, This story was particularly engaging. I expected it to be a little dull, but Ms. Osborne really brings Shakespeare alive in this tale. Because of this story, my children have a knowledge of who Shakespeare is, and they are much more interested in his works now. The story follows the same format as the other books in the series, and provides a broad overview of how theater might have worked during the renaissance period. My daughter, particularly, was fascinated to learn that women were not on the stage, and what followed was pure shock on my son's part that men and boys had to play the female roles. I recommend this book as a starting point to further discussions on theater and Shakespeare's plays.

Great books for kids to read. My son got started on these books when he was in first grade. They are chapter books. His first grade teacher started reading them to the class and my son got hooked. When he was in first grade he was reading at a second grade level, so his teacher encouraged him to read these. He's still an advanced reader, so he just read through the books like nothing.

We have bought a number of the Magic Tree House series for our grandson and he loves them all, and even does the online test afterward. I understand that they are supposed to be 3rd grade level reading, but our grandson is 7, so if you have a good reader who is interested in learning about things as well, it is a good choice.
