Milton Snavely Hershey was an American chocolatier and philanthropist. He pioneered the manufacture of caramel using fresh milk. The first Hershey Bars became so popular that he was able to build his own company town of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and founded the Hershey Chocolate Corporation. For a time he worked for a confectioner in Denver, where his roving father had located. Father and son next ran a candy business in Chicago, until the elder Hershey endorsed a friend's bad note. Young Hershey made another start in New York City, but after initial success the venture collapsed in 1886. Back in Lancaster, Hershey scraped together enough money to begin afresh.

I found myself impressed with both the book and Mr. Hershey after reading this. The book presents the series of difficulties the man had to overcome, the opportunities he either grasped or squandered, the family which in turns supported him and at other times dragged him down and tried to keep him there.

Like many who try to start their own businesses, Hershey faced many failures before finding success and his story is one that could epitomize the 'American Dream' of pulling yourself up (again and again) to reach beyond the circumstances you began in to become something better. This is an inspiring story, but never trips the line into a farcical tale where every choice is golden and every person a hero. Everyone has faults and this book shows the real, deep-seated issues that caused continuous problems in Hershey's family, but the author never sensationalized them or blew the issues up into scandalous proportions.

In addition to the educational value of reading a biography about the life of Milton Hershey, you also learn a great deal about the economy of yesteryear - how a penny could be valuable and how easy it was to lose everything and slip into poverty. You see glimpses of how rare sugared treats were, especially to the poor, and how difficult it was to find a way to make a living.

Having said all that, I think my favorite part of this book was how the author balanced out the dueling ideas of practicality and dreams. Mr. Hershey had to have a measure of both to succeed and finding the right balance was probably his most difficult task, but in the end he accomplished it.

I'd highly recommend this book!

We recently studied Milton Hershey in our homeschool. My children wanted to know more and this book was the answer. It contains a lot of information but does not bore the child. If you want to introduce your children to biographies, this is a great place to start. His life is not boring but exciting and meaningful. I recommend having hershey chocolate chip pancakes while reading this to the kids! :) (They loved that!)

I ordered this book for a workshop I was going to give on the history of chocolate as well as the famous chocolatiers there have been over the years. Hershey was the best by far, with the children. But sadly due to the fact that the book came after the workshop was given I could not use it. Hope I can read it one of these days.
My daughter read this book for school. She is not an avid reader and really needs an interesting book to get her going. She found the story about his life very interesting and the writing was easy to read. She is in 6th grade and enjoyed the book.
