Description

G. Hennessy came up with the idea for THE ONCE UPON A TIME MAP BOOK when her sons were bringing home school assignments involving map reading. I've always liked the maps with the little pictures," she says. So I decided to create a pictorial map book, a kind of travel guide to places kids would really want to visit. Peter Joyce says, "As a child I was fascinated by little maps in stories that showed where everything happened and how it related. I enjoyed drawing my way around these famous fairy tales.

This book is great, it really brings life to the fairy tales like Snow White and even Peter Pan with big colorful maps of everything you read about in the stories

He has illustrated a number of children's books and lives in Lyme Regis. This book is great, it really brings life to the fairy tales like Snow White and even Peter Pan with big colorful maps of everything you read about in the stories. We have a lot of fun going over the map, and I really think for a youngster 4-7 or so it is perfect for their age and imagination. It really puts a picture to the story, and makes the fairy tales all the more real. The maps are very colorful and vibrant, and really took some imagination and time to put together.

Very fun book with detailed maps of magical places (Peter Pan's island, Oz, et. There's a path to follow and hidden pictures to find in each map.

Hennessy and Joyce have created a playfully illustrated book to help kids practice map reading. Each map is set against an quadrant grid (can you find the Jolly Roger at A4?) and a compass to provide directional context is placed in the corner. Readers must consult the key to figure out how long a munchkin mile is and how to recognize the pebble road as compared to the yellow brick road. Very fun book with detailed maps of magical places (Peter Pan's island, Oz, et. So fun!

G. So I decided to create a pictorial map book, a kind of travel guide to the places my own kids would really want to visit.

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 and heavily into the world of princesses (especially Snow White) and fantasy. She had the book for months before she ventured off the Snow White page. There is so much to do and see with this book, and it can be easily adapted for multiple ages. This book is an especially good companion to reading some of these classics for the first time (Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and others). While the older child will memorize the maps and whiz through the hidden pictures rather quickly, all kids will enjoy the creative process of studying the map and imagining what else happens. We have fun asking questions about where other scenes from these books could happen on the map and making our own maps from there.

The maps are very colorful and vibrant, and really took some imagination and time to put together. There are a lot of fun things packed in, I really enjoy it as much as my daughter. Haven't reviewed many things but HAD to write one for this because every parent needs this on the bookshelf.

This is an amazing book that has taught my son (age 4.5) about maps. It is so fun. This book is not just words on a page, but it inspires adult-child interaction - oh, wait, let's look in the key; let's look at the compass rose; what's southeast? - without being patronizing or pendantic to either party. So much fun. Seriously - my son has spent 2 days drawing a map of his "neighborhood" - where his stuffed animals live - in the style of this book. I've helped him write down directions. We got this book from the library and bought it within the week because I could see it is a treasure.

This is an instant favorite for children and adults. The maps are so colorful and detailed; this book is a visual feast! The different lands are fun to investigate, especially if your child is familiar with the story behind each map. Explore the worlds of Jack and the Beanstalk, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, and Aladdin through maps. This is a book that can grow with a child. A preschooler would enjoy this book and as they get older, introduce them to more and more of the map concepts.

We enjoyed this one tons! Love the colorful pictures, fairy tales, and engaging story. Used it for geography map unit study.

I love that this book has well done, detailed maps. Each page has a different map (Alice in Wonderland, Jack and Beanstalk) with little hidden treasures to find. It also introduces kids on how to read a map (key, points of interest, grids-A2, B5, etc.). Each map lets children explore each world or take a trip via the instructions. It kept our 5 year old busy for awhile and she really enjoyed it.

I've been helping in a 5th grade Social Studies class and we've been working on geography. North, south, east and west, is confusing. This really helped, especially the grid format. I read the story first and then we used the maps. So fun.
This is a great book that the whole family enjoys. It's fun to pick a map and since everyone knows the fairy tales already- to make new endings or stories and characters based on the wonderful maps. I've bought more of these as baby shower gifts to add to family libraries.
