by Dana Meachen Rau. Series: Smithsonian Odyssey. One Giant Leap recounts the story of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon through the eyes of a 12 year old boy named Tomas, who has a vision that he is Neil Armstrong about to land on the moon. This was an okay story, a little dry. The illustrations were actually more interesting due to their realism. The narration could hardly hold my attention. It felt as if the author was assuming the reader already knew about the Apollo 11 landing and the people on board, but I most children likely don't. This would be more for children with special interests in this type of study.

The first half of this brief biography showcases Armstrong's childhood, his . That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind.

The first half of this brief biography showcases Armstrong's childhood, his hobbies, part-time jobs, and determination to earn a pilot's license. The second part highlights his historic flight to the moon and the thrill of being the first human to set foot on its surface. Brown's text is simple enough for very young children to enjoy, while the accompanying illustrations skillfully use perspective to capture the world through a child's eyes. The story has been told many times, but perhaps never with so much heart and spirit.
