I read this story as a child. I loved Colin Thiele. His stories usually featured young people in a rural area of South Australia.
This story about Bruno who lived on a farm in the Mid North Area of South Australia is full of his wonderful adventures within his large family. From catching possums, sinking wells, a new car and catching criminals his escapades make you smile and laugh.
Mr Thiele writes about a time when things seem simpler , no TV or Internet, but at the same time it was a hard life with no bathroom, women cooking all day long and water worries.
This however doesn't detract the reader as one just enjoys the lovely tale.
Other books I would recommend by this author are -Blue Fin Fire in the Stone February Dragon Storm Boy

This is an awesome book that I read my Year 5 students. It is well written with a good mix of action, humour and exposure to life in pre-WWII Australia. It stimulates discussions comparing and contrasting technology, farm and city life and how to deal with the practical and emotional challenges of growing up. A great read.

This is a classic Australian book from my childhood that I am now able to share with my seven year old as bed-time reading from my Kindle. She loves it too and it has the added magic of being set no more than half an hours drive from our where we live today. Definitely worth the money and is a keeper that can be read over and over.

A very enjoyable read . Basically a bunch of short stories set over a year before bruno leaves the farm . Inocent humour

I first read Colin Thele's Sun On The Stubble as a boy in primary school and enjoyed a setting which I could clearly visualise and blend the characters into. The story of the family in the book identifies each character individualy by focusing on them though the narators eyes. It is written in first-person past-tence, similar to recited memories, with the book filling up the last years of a young boys life on an early 20th century Australian farm, before that boy realises the progression of life and leaves the chores and playmates of the farming community for manhood.
The book is a good read for anyone with a sentimental eye for times past in the Australian bush. The stories are lively enough for younger kids around 9 to 13, and it is just as likely to be picked up by your grandfather.
Ive always had a copy of the book on the shelf, and it makes for an easy read. I still love the stories about the Possum in the kitchen, smoking on the way to school and building the dam across the creek...

Had to read this, while not too bad, I much prefer Blue Fin, or Storm Boy. This is the story of some German immigrants who come to South Australia to make a life for themselves, and the hard work, troubles and rewards that they encounter along the way.
