Once in Puerto Rico book. I wanted to read some of Pura Belpré's work because while I've read many Pura Belpré Honor books, I had never read anything of hers. This was a short collection of stories from Puerto Rico. Some were native legends, others were urban legends of San Juan, and others featured Spanish characters.

Pura Belpré (February 2, 1899 – July 1, 1982) was the first Puerto Rican librarian in New York City. She was also a writer, collector of folktales, and puppeteer. Belpré was born in Cidra, Puerto Rico. There is some dispute as to the date of her birth which has been given as February 2, 1899, December 2, 1901 and February 2, 1903

Sixteen folktales from Puerto Rico deal with Indians, explorers, saints, peasants, and city life. Combines tales and legends about Puerto Rico's early development and people.
