Best Stories for Five-Year-Olds book. Hence I didn't have the privilege of reading Enid Blyton, Dr Seuss or Roald Dahl. Now, with my 5 year old daughter, I get the chance to read those treasure of books :) For a non-native English speaker, I had to take the help of a dictionary to find the meanings of many words used. May be those words are commonly used in English speaking world.

One of the best short-story collections for 5-8 yr old girls or boys. The stories sometimes have strange but funny twists. When I was child I enjoyed Enid's book very well. Busy life like in USA my parents was busy everyday so that Enid's book lead me how to find happiness and smile in the mind. A Child must have this book like food for getting enough energy.

I was looking for something with a narrative as a first step away from picture books. The stories did hold my son's interest (he is almost 4), but I found I couldn't keep reading them. As another reviewer noted, they are extremely didactic. I wouldn't have so much of a problem with that except that the underlying messages are not necessarily ones I want my son to absorb, especially in such a mean-spirited way. Examples: Please Shut the Gate (kids' lunch is destroyed, and it's all their fault), Wizard Ho-Ho's Hen (keep the little people down, they owe everything to the powerful ones, if they try to get something good for themselves that the powerful people have, it's all the worse for them), The Birthday Cake (if you do something wrong, you will be punished and it serves you right), The Chocolate Rabbit (if you are a chocolate rabbit, you are going to be eaten, no matter what you do), The Complaining Tadpole (everyone telling off and laughing at a little one's ignorance). I could stomach one or two of these if the rest were more delightful, but every one? Ick. I'd be curious whether anyone knows whether her Faraway Tree series is similarly preachy -- those stories sound like much more fun.

Keeping it simple I'll just say my 5 year old loved this book and requested it each day until we had read all the stories within. Some of the tales are very similar to traditional classics such as The Gingerbread Man. Others are more original, and all are short and entertaining. We found these more thought provoking than many current children's books which spoon feed morals or ideas instead of letting the story present enough information for your child to deduce or grasp the moral/consequence/lesson.

You can't beat Enid. Almost unknown in USA but every kid in other English speaking countries knows her.

A lot of fun and how much story in 3 pages each!
Enjoy!

These stories are very simple and didactic, but my five-year-old enjoys our reading sessions together. Her only complaint is that the stories are too short!
