This was the nursery rhyme book I grew up with, and today, more than half a century later, I still spend time with it. It has lost both its covers and several pages are scribbled on with gold crayon, but I will never throw it away. Every grandmother or grandfather should give a copy to his or her newborn grandchild, and every mother and father should read the poems aloud to him or her from day one.

Art techniques used: Partial and full page pencil drawings with watercolor

Art techniques used: Partial and full page pencil drawings with watercolor. All about "Mother Goose" - The pretty songs of Tommy Thumb - And a melody of twenty-five others - Simple Simon and Nancy Cock - Gammer Gurton's garland - Tom Tit, The piper's son, and some Christmas boxes - Old Mother Hubbard and other songs for the nursery - More catches and ditties.

Many modern nursery rhyme/Mother Goose books abbreviate the rhymes (like "London Bridge"); however, Marguerite de Angeli includes the full versions. The rhymes in this book haven't been modified to sound gentler (like "There Was an Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe"). This book has both coloured & black-&-white illustrations. If you enjoy Mother Goose/nursery rhymes & are able to find a good, used copy, this is the perfect book.

My father gave me this book when I was a little girl. I loved reading the old rhymes and memorizing them. Over time I realized that these rhymes are frequently referred to in our culture and it was an asset to truly know them and to feel familiar with them. These rhymes also were my early training in memorization. At age 59 I can still recite many of them!

This year I managed to track one down (I can't imagine why it is out of print) and gave it to my great-niece as a gift. She's an avid reader, aged 8, and I thought it was time for her to learn the rhymes. My hope is that she will begin to memorize them. This will consequently increase her mental facility. (Can you tell that I used to be teacher before I retired?)

My niece, her mother, called to tell me that she loves it and I could't be more pleased.

I had this book as a child, & I loved it. After years of searching, I finally found a great copy at Amazon.com for a reasonable price. This book's got tons of Mother Goose & nursery rhymes, plus riddles. It's a large book & has many rhymes that you don't find in modern Mother Goose/nursery rhyme books. I loved the content of the book. I realize that the book was printed in 1970 but it was listed as new. I think it was the mailing of the book that compromised the corners. They were somewhat bent. It was a gift for my great grandson and it was presented. I was not prepared for such
a long time for delivery; however the dates were plainly stated. I was very happy to find the book. It was what I was looking for.

Was delighted to find a rare book. I gifted it to a new mother expecting her first child.

The Nursery Rhymes were varied and some I hadn't even heard before! Really liked that these were not politically altered either. The illustrations when you do see them are beautiful but the pages really do seem bare and not as organized as I would have liked.

Received as expected. It's old as expected and I found it a bit lack luster but it was my decision to buy it and I find no fault with the seller.
I got this book because I couldn't find mine and when I was a little kid my mom would read it to me and I Whant to do that with my kids some day
