The Conquerors, the third volume in Allan Eckert's acclaimed series, The Winning of America, continues the narrative of The Frontiersmen and Wilderness Empire: the violent and monumental story of the wresting of the North American continent from the Indians.

Allan Wesley Eckert (January 30, 1931 – July 7, 2011) was an American writer who specialized in historical novels for adults and children, and was also a naturalist. His novel Incident at Hawk's Hill was initially marketed to adults and selected by Reader's Digest Condensed Books. A runner-up for the Newbery Medal in 1972, it was afterward marketed as a children's novel and adapted by Disney for a television movie known as The Boy Who Talked to Badgers (1975).

Allan Eckert brings the story of Tecumseh, Simon Kenton, and a whole cast of others to life. Excellent book as is the entire series and the companion book- That Dark and Bloody River: Chronicles of the Ohio River Valley, and his book about Tecumseh - A Sorrow in Our Heart: The Life of Tecumseh. They're basically history books written in the form of a novel.

The Conquerors (Winning of America Series). This is one of the weaker books in Eckert's series, but it was still a good read.

The Conquerors is a spectacular piece of historical writing. The subject of the book is Ottawa (Odawa) chief Pontiac's uprising against the British in 1763. Much of the action focuses on the siege of Fort Detroit and the attacks against some of the other forts in Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana. The book also covers the Delaware and Shawnee raids in Pennsylvania and throughout the rest of the frontier. This book is part of the "Winning of America" series in which it follows Wilderness Empire and precedes the Frontiersmen. Like he does with the rest of the books in the series, the author uses a unique style of writing in that it's not pure non-fiction/history and it's not fiction. It would probably be best described as history with some rhetorical embellishment. Another aspect of the book which is an asset is that the author attempts to treat both the American Indians and the British fairly. If you like history, you'll enjoy this book--just be prepared for some graphic violence.

This is a good book on a period of Michigan history called the Pontiac Conspiracy. I loved this book because most of the events took place were I grew up in the Detroit area. If you are from Michigan and from Detroit in particular this is a good book for you. I have read all of Mr. Eckert's book and they are all good reads. He spent allot of time researching the information and it is all fact.

Allen Eckert has a wonderful, unique style that brings life to real history. I would recomment any of his works to anyone with an interest in the American Indian, the settling of America, or the lives of pioneers. The book is a large paperback.

Pontiac's war and the stupidity of the English military elite very well described. Holds your attention throughout, highlighting the bravery and horror of that little-known but essential period in our history. .
Allen Eckert writes some pretty good speculative history. This one did get a bit long though. Not as exciting as the Frontiersman.
