This situation is especially ironic because community study offers a framework which overcomes many of the problems and fulfills most of the goals of contemporary historical archaeology. Historical archaeologists today give the study of plantations a prominent place in their field. The historiography of Spanish America has a long history. Conversely, the criminal justice system, which I study in the second chapter, increasingly encouraged an individualised and introspective self, with a true nature which could only be changed with great difficulty. In the third and fourth chapter, I shift the perspective away from general regulating practices towards specific technologies with which people could change their self.
