Notes on the State of Virginia (1785) is a book written by Thomas Jefferson. He completed the first version in 1781, and updated and enlarged the book in 1782 and 1783.

The Massachusetts Historical Society owns a remarkable document in Thomas Jefferson's own handwriting, the text of his only full-length book, Notes on the State of Virginia. When Jefferson was in Paris in 1785 representing the United States as a diplomat, he paid to have 200 copies of Notes printed for private distribution. Prior to publication, Jefferson reworked an earlier version of his manuscript by using sealing wax to attach corrections and changes written on small additional pieces of paper to full handwritten pages. He also expanded the text by inserting additional full pages.

Thomas Jefferson published one book, Notes on the State of Virginia, and ever since, it has been the touchstone for understanding Jefferson's ideas about republican government, the environment, education, race and slavery, and Native-white relations. A collection of lively documents accompanies the core text of the Notes, and charts the evolution of the book in the revolutionary crucible and during the heady early days of the new nation.

Thomas Jefferson's Notes on Virginia is unique in American literary history. The Notes on Virginia is probably the most important scientific and political book written by an American before 1785; upon it much of Jefferson's contemporary fame as a philosopher was based. The Notes reveals more clearly than any of his writings except his letters the flexibility of Jefferson's mind and the breadth of his interests.

Thomas Jefferson published one book, Notes on the State of Virginia; and ever since, it has been the touchstone for understanding Jefferson’s ideas about Republican government, the environment, education, race and slavery, and Native-white relations. The author’s unique analysis of Jefferson’s thoughts on these crucial issues and their impact on the formation of the United States make this edition of the Notes the first to present these issues as fundamentally inseparable. A collection of lively letters and other documents related to the Notes accompanies them, and charts the evolution of the book in the revolutionary crucible and during the heady early days of the new nation. An introduction by David Waldstreicher places the work in the contexts of the Revolution and the social and cultural history of Jefferson’s Virginia, with particular attention to developing ideas about race and nature. A chronology of the life and career of Thomas Jefferson and selected bibliography also add to the pedagogical benefits of this volume.

This document testifies to Thomas Jefferson's true opinions on Africans as a race of people, which was denigrating and coarse. One can compare his writing on the freedoms in the new American republic and his pride in them as a founding patriot, with what he thought of slaves and their intellectual and cultural capacities to function as free people in a free society. He offers a solution to issues around emancipation that would involve deporting all people of African descent, and replacing them by attracting people of the white race to leave their countries and come to America. Jefferson also writes that he fears for the effects that the brutality of the practice of slavery will have on the future of America, as well as God's wrath.

There wasn't anything really special about this book. In fact, most of the interesting and telling information occurs in the last few chapters. But, if you're looking for a historical book that lists every nook and cranny almost of Virginia, then this is it.

I was disappointed that this "complete illustrated edition" has no images, drawings, or maps of any kind. Perhaps I misinterpreted the word "illustrated". There are some rectangular data tables... Regardless, I returned the book in favor of a different edition.

This is not the quality publication I expected. This edition is soft back with too many typographical errors. I would not purchase this book again.

Very honest & surprisingly not very "pc!" You'd be surprised what the opinion was back then. Eye opener. This is in all schools & universities. Worth having or to re-read again.
