Such a waste of money I could not finish it. The litmus test for authenticity of information was its information on a tribe with which I am very familiar. Rather than carefully research and fact-check the tribe's history the author merely repeated popular myths and misinformation. Accurate information on the other tribes can easily be found in previous books and on the Internet. Not a very scholarly work.

This is a great read. I read over most of it for my North Carolina Indians class. It covers the Southeastern Indians comprehensively, from the Paleoindian era up until about 1960. If you want to learn about Indians who lived and continue to live in the South, this is the place to go.
Highlights:
The Paleoindian, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississipian eras of Southeastern Indian Civilization.
Exploration of the South by DeSoto through the Roanoke colony
Indians and various wars- in NC the Tuscarora War was especially important while WWII had a gigantic influence on Indians overall
The Green Corn Ceremony (most important religous ceremony)
Deer and slave trades with the French, English, and Americans for guns, kettles and alcohol
Uktenas (Cherokee Snake monster with wings and antlers) and other creatures
Removal of the "Five Civilized Tribes" (Chickasaws, Cherokees, Creeks, Seminoles, and Choctaws)
Indian food and medicine like the Three Sisters (Corn, beans and squash), Black Drink (Indian coffee which is easy to make), and the use of bear oil
Brannylv Brannylv
A scholarly and interesting study of the southeastern Indians.
